So........

Seeing that I lost ALL of my kit on Sunday, I am now looking at new stuff.

So what is the big dilemma we all have this time of year?

It's damn cold

I wear 4 layers of kit on. Undershirt, then Bib, then shirt and finally jacket.  Arm warmers & Leg warmers.

About 9ish it gets warm and you now have to get rid of all the stuff.....where to put it.....

What if you only have ONE jacket that actually does the job of breaking the wind and being warm enough in winter?  No armwarmers.  No bib.

Does the SA market have such a jacket?

I was looking at the following:

Assos ma net geld gehad het daarvoor!!Cry  But they make GOOD stuff so I am willing to save up and buy once.

Intermediate jacket from Assos

Interactive

And then lastly...but I think this will be too warm....????

Do we even GET these jackets on the SA market?

Does anyone out there have any first hand knowledge of the above listed clothing?

Any suggestions?

sounds to me that you are wearing way too much kit --

i just do winter bib - full length for when i will be back before the sun comes up and 3/4 for when i will be back later.

canberra long sleeve undershirt (the stuff the rugby players wear) - this is excellent with moisture wicking and actually does maintain a comfortable body temp (almost like climate control)

normal LS cycling top and windproof bib if it is howling after snow in lesotho.

most important is the beanie - nike skullcap is the best!!!!

windproof gloves.

neoprene booties for when back when it is still dark and neoprene toecaps for when back later.

Said it before and I'll say it again Etxeondo....call Mike at BH Bikes, I wear one jacket that is as thin as a normal cycling shirt and it is pretty much guaranteed to keep you warm in temps up to -16 which is around -40 with the wind chill factor - in fact I am too bloody hot in winter.

For me it is

Top

Base layer from Due South

Short sleeve shirt

BBB thermal armwarmers

Mr price wind jammer/rain coat (if it is really cold)

Legs

Norma bibs

Giordana Themal bibs

Head

Either buff or Giordana earwarmers

And if it's really cold I use a Cannondale LE balaclava. Only used this once since I got it.

Gloves

LG Windtex

if it's really cold I use my Nike running gloves inside. Only iused it once.

Spidy this is the jacket I wear - except it is bright lumonous Green (Only one in the country) but not only do they look good they are as warm as all hell. Once you have ridden in winter with this you will be kicking yourself that you never invested in one earlier.

Well, on Sunday my knees got blue in the dark, so I'm starting to wear legwarmers again.

A good winter jacket has soft fleecy stuff on the inside and plasticky goretexy squares on the outside to keep the wind out.  That means going international (local stuff doesn't cut it)  Nalini, Santini (I *really* wish the local importer would get my size) is cheaper than Assos.

For SA temps it works if you use a local jacket and a decent (international) windjammer on top to keep the wind out.  I quite like the Nalini windjammer with zips on the side so you can get to your pockets.

Adidas make a rain jacket with removable sleeves, which is good for rides that start cold and end warm.  The rain jacket keeps the wind out.

For the beanies I use a buff.  I only cover my ears if I end the ride in the dark.  Cover my mouth with the buff to prevent EIA -- no puffs here.

The neoprene toe covers are good.  Full neoprene booties are too warm.

For gloves the best bet is two layers: inside cheap white cotton running gloves, and any full-fingered glove on top.  Two layers is the only way to prevent the fingers from feeling the pain.  Running gloves are cheap -- go to any running store.  It gets too warm, and you remove one glove.
