Best car to rent for transporting bike

I'm doing the LCE in Langebaan this weekend and will be hiring a car to get up there (from Cape Town).

 

I don't own a bike rack—what would be the best car that I could hire that would be able to hold a road bike (with front and/or back wheel off) in the boot?

 

I'll be taking the family, so putting seats down won't be an option as the kids will be in the back.

 

Been looking at the Fortuner and the Hilux.

Quote a few car hire companies have cars with tow-hitches and bike racks too.  Or they have clip-on racks.  That way you can hire a normal hatchback or similar.  Much cheaper option.

How many people are going to be driving with you in the car? A road and MTB fit in any of the A segment rental cars. Well all the ones I have used so getting one bike in with all you luggage should be a synch. not to mention it is safer that way.

It'll be 2 adults and 2 kids. I'm only going up for the race, so luggage will be minimal.

Ask you broker to request a quote from the company that they outsource car hire to on your short term insurance.

 

They'll rent it to you at the same rate as they do your insurer.

You could also consider something like the Toyota Rush ... has the space you are looking for, but really PAP.

 

The Suzuki Ertiga has the same space, and a much better driver.

 

 

both these has more packing space than the Fortuner type vehicles .... all depending on just how much space you need for the luggage and bike ...

Depending on what size bike you ride, with both wheels off you should be able to fit your bike in the boot of a polo classic. Worst case scenario you'll need to remove the seatpost as well.

The Avanza is really versatile. lots of folding seats and room. Use them for field work in the Drakensberg. Pretty amazing where they can actually get to. Light and rear wheel drive.

Have you possibly had the opportunity to compare the Avanza vs the Suzuki Ertiga (the newer 1500cc version) ?

 

Similar ground clearance, packing space, etc ....

 

 

But the Ertiga is front wheel drive ... which may well be an issue if you really want to go further off the beaten track ....  then again, the Ertiga is a much nicer drive ....

 

 

 

Looking at either the Rush (avanza in a dress) vs the Ertiga GLX for our next car ... biggest problem with the Rush being that Toyota in the Western Cape wont sell it with a towbar, and the two test drives have been less than impressive in terms of noise levels and the driving experience.  Getting the bikes into the Ertiga is just a bit more tricky, as the boot has a step, but it is a much nicer car in all other aspects ....

Actually, a small sedan (what used to be called a Corolla) with a boot is best. With both wheels off the bike goes in the boot and the people in the car.

Certainly NOT in a 2018 Jetta !

 

 

The dimensions work.  But they have created a stupid "stepped" system with the boot lid getting smaller, and higher off the floor.  So the bike must go into the boot at a downward angle, then hits the back seats.  And you cant lift the bit that hits the seat as the final bit of the bike is not into the boot yet ...  (okay - this was with the back wheel fitted, I was trying out options that could be used often, without exposing the derailure ...)
