Shimano Rear Mech Short cage question

The Ouzo

Recommended Posts

It seems I was one shift away from being stranded on the side of the road.

Cleaned the bike today, then shifted the rear to take the wheel off and one fo the jockey pulled wheels went flying.

I have all the parts, but it looks like the bolt holding the jockey pulley on pulled out the threads from the cage.

There is probably 1 or 2 turns left on the cage.

Should I get it retapped or is it new derailleur time or can you buy the cages separate.

Since you have access to the tech, give it a try.

Otherwise a replacement 5800 RD shouldn't be too pricey.

Unless like someone said, this calls for a new bike. LOL :D

Heli coil or see if you can fit a longer bolt. Don't forget the lock tight

longer bolt won't help as there are only like 1 or 2 coils of thread left on the cage.

hoping that if the techs can't sort it out I can atleast get a new cage instead of the entire RD.

n+1 is always good, but this bike is less than a year old.

I've taken the RD off, going to see if the techs at work can tap and put in a helicoil

There's isn't enough thread for a helicoil.

a new jockey cage backing plate will do the trick.

If it's the lower pulley you can getto fix it by buying a longer M4 countersunk machine screw with 8mm shank and 15mm overall length and fit a nut on the spoke side. The lower wheel is far enough away from the spokes

If it's cage then as Diesel said, pop a nut on the other side, otherwise cage parts are replaceable.

Techies arent able to help, a) not enough meat on a cage for a secure helicoil b) they dont have helicoils that small

LBS says they normally just put a longer bolt and nut on.

So thats what I'll be doing.

New RD will set me back R900. Not now thanks.

Your lbs should be able to order you a new plate they not to pricey

Apparently on a 105 the inside plate cant be changed.

I'm guessing it can, but local importers dont sell them.

Fix it with the longer bolt temporarily and then order the parts from SJScycles.co.uk

or yo'll have to buy a whole new jockey pulley cage assembly

it sucks that they don't bring in simple spares for their components

I can see why now. At 20 pound for the part (as per SJS) by the time it lands here its half the price of a complete new RD, make more sense to get the new RD then.

new bolt and nut didnt work, simply not enough clearance between the big cog and the spokes.

I shaved it down as much as I was comfortable with, anything more and I'm not confident there is enough left of the nut to do the job.

I'm going to go look for a sleeved nut today. That way I can enlarge the hole on the cage and the sleeved nut can slip in there out of the way.
