It will work on 5G so that’s not a lie; apparently they are neglecting to mention that they do not as yet offer 5G for reasons I won’t pretend to know.

Spectrum, they and all the other telcos need spectrum. Who controls the allocation of spectrum...... take a wild guess.

We have 5G coverage at one of my sites that I work at.  BUT Vodacom did not enable 5G on the iPhones yet.  They sell it as that, but if you get your device you can't select 5G as it is not an option.  Should have gone with MTN

I honestly have no idea, but I’d guess ICASA?

How does this work?

I know that with some Android devices the manufacturer can tailor it to suit their needs but with iOS the OS is supposed to be consistent regardless of which network, and likewise the hardware of the phones.

Is it that they have not made 5G available on their network and therefore the phone doesn’t show it as an option rather than them not enabling it on the device itself?

I’m guessing this is a language/ semantics confusion.

No idea to be honest, but I would guess that the SP (Vodascum) has to push a setting (know they push it sometimes to update things on the phone) and they did not do it yet.

Ghost is correct. The network will need to enable it as a service.

Ah okay, so yeah it’s not something related to the hardware (the phone itself) but rather the network.

according to them 5G should work en should be enabled. Bit their support is useless and just like the ANC to blame everything but themselves

^^ This setting is actually pushed by Apple, not Vodacom or MTN.

From what I hear, Apple hasn't enabled 5G for Vodacom yet.

But still Vodacom will tell you that the devices already supports 5G on the Vodacom network.

I have about 25 replies on Facebook from Vodascum that tell people that the device already can connect to the 5G network. Not that the device is 5G ready, but not enabled due to their crappy network.

Vodacom does have an operation 5G mobile network (was actually live before MTN) and supports a number of 5G handsets already, Samsung, etc. So, if they tell you they support 5G handsets, that is 100% correct.

HOWEVER, Apple have not yet enabled iPhone 12 devices for Vodacom's network. This is a function of Apple, not Vodacom. When Apple push the new configs down to the phones, they'll automatically start working.

Honestly I dont care in the least about 5G, with the pathetic cellular data allowances in SA you could chew through an entire month's worth of data in an hour at those speeds.

Now if we had decently sized caps or even properly uncapped services at affordable prices it would be a different story.

It was the same thing when 4G was first releasing on phones, speeds were severely disproportionate to data allowances and the devices were more expensive than the 3G options until the SOC's became mainstream.
