Busy replacing the gear cables on my son's Cannondale Scalpel.

I need to find out where I can get that thin plastic sheeving that you get with new frames so I can route the cable through the frame internally. I currently still have the old gear cable routed in the internal channel.

Any ideas?

Ok then you don't need the inner sheath. The bike runs a continuous housing from the shifter to the derailleur.

just replace the cable  first.

then when done, replace the outer housing by sliding it over the cable

You have to remove the frame guides first and that is quite a fiddlly job so take your time.

undo the screw and push the guide out gently. It may not move at first due to dirt so spray soapy water in there to help it move

Shimano Sells that Stuff as a product Check with LBS.

Alternatively You can cut up a new gear cable. You will find that stuff in the Center of any gear cable.

My LBS is closed today. They all out on the Brewery ride. I will see who else might be open.

I tried shoving the new cable housing through, but it gets stuck about 90% through.

OK, so I did not remove the frame guides. Removed the screws though. I did look at a way to remove those guides, but yes, I can see that this part of the job might be a challenge. I looked for ways to get something in there to dislodge those guides, but so far had no luck. And I did not want to force the issue and break them.

Yeah that won't work. The guide is held n place but a screw on the outside of the frame and then the cable guide is clamped closed by a tiny screw that you can only access once the guide is out.

The best way to get it out is too undo the derailleur cable and then start to push it up the downtube. so that it forces the head tube guide out (remember to leave the guide at the bottom of the down tube fastened inside the frame and the headtube guide undone. It should eventually move. You may need to prise it out completely with circlip plier or a 2mm allen key.

If you can leave the job with your LBS it will save you a lot of swearing, bruised knuckles, and broken finger nails.

Once you have the headtube guide out and removed then repeat for the lower guide at bottom of the downtube.

I honestly don't know what Cannondale thought they were doing with the design of those guides.

If you come right and manage the job on your own, remember to grease the heck out of that guide before you reinstall it. I'm glad its only once per year that I need to do this :(

Yes. The BMWs of the cycling world. They make it so hard to work on them for no reason at all. Think I will just leave this with Rockhopper Adventures. Just now I lose my cool and hit the frame with a hammer.  :cursing:

make sure its a rubber one......

first time I did the cable replacement I ended up stripping the lefty off as well. and did pivot bearings prelacement as well. It was just easier to do a full service than struggle with cable replacement LOL

Haha...thought it was just mine getting stuck....I accidentally pulled the lower cable guide into the frame...and i cant get it out...all the crud is that area makesnjt impossible to get the guide out through the BB holes...last resort it to undo the brake hose...kaaaak design..

OP was a year ago, so dont worry about that....

I have managed to pull the cable guide plug out of the frame by turning the plug around in the frame..then it comes out much much easier...... Genius... if I have to say so myself!
