I'm traveling to the bustling metropolis of Upington soon for 10 days or so, and want to bring my MTB along to keep riding. Are there any nice trails or gravel roads along the river one can ride?

Yes here are a few routes.

My training is non existent this year.

But more than willing to hook you up with the local`s or even routes if you want to explore yourself.

Do not expect alot of climbing, but beautiful gravel routes along the river, vineyards with few trails build by farmers around Kanoneiland.

From Upington you can also do a route over the "meent grond" that is around 45km, names Rateldraai.

Willing to drive a bit, can recommend Khamkirri, the owners have built a trail.

If you are in Kakamas or willing to travel, speak to Gerhard at the Pink Padstal.

Can give you few route options from 25km to 100km.

We call this route Kanoneiland blok.

There is a part were you ride past the refuge dump, but you can skip and make it out and back and just stay on Louisvale side.

This is part of the Rateldraai route.

Travel by car to Orange Rus and ride the trails of Gawie Steyn.

There are 4 different options, the one along the river is special.

Long day in the saddle from Upington to Keimoes, using the Eksteenkuil gravel road. In Keimoes head out of town but choose the gravel road past sementry to Soverby, Curries Kamp to Kanoneiland. Option to drive to Orange Rus and only do Keimoes blok about 63km.

Rateldraai route.

Upington to Keimoes with pick up in Keimoes, climbing Tierkop in Keimoes to have a view of the Orange River Valley.

Will be able to assist even with routes around Upington on the retaining walls, pass the golf course and airport.

Sadly my training is seriously lacking.

Pleasure.

Various options, you can go past the airport on the cobblestone road out on the Tellerie Pan road for an out and back into the Kalahari.

There is a loop through the Kalahari but not during summer.

You can go left over the bridge and head in Groblershoop direction, these farmers have closed some of the sections, but are friendly and do not mind if cyclist open a gate.

Dirk from Cycle City is keen to take cyclist out, normally during December, here is an actor, Charlie, that also rides with Dirk.

The normal place where the cyclist leave is at the stop street in Schroderstreet in front of the old Gordonia Hospital.

Being summer early starts 5am, 6am and perhaps 7am, but it is going to be hot.

We are still undecided if we should leave for Heroldsbay, but please send me PM perhaps we can meet, I can explain over the phone, my cycling took a serious back seat the last three years, probably done 200km in those 3 years, but should be good for a 20 - 30km ride.

Our climate has changed over the years.

Yes the days are hot, 38 - 43 degrees.

Our evenings and early mornings has cooled down considerably.

Early morning starts is best.
