BB Servicing

Guys, need some help here..

I have had a Tru Ativ BB and CrankSet donated towards my build a bike with pre loved parts project..

The BB is rough feeling and sounding when turned by hand. Had a look, but i cant see if the bearings can be changed... cant see a obvious way to remove them..

Please let me if its possible, alternatively is a new BB to fit Tru Ativ five ten cranks a pricy option..

BB is a Tru Ativ powerspline

There won't be any obvious-looking ways of getting that bearing out because it was press-fit in.

If you look carefully, you'll see one bearing is pressed in from the inside and came to a halt at a collar that can only be reached from the inside. The axle was then pressed through that bearing until it came to a stop at its own collar. The last bearing is then added to the other side. The trick is to now reverse the process by starting with the first bearing and reversing out the whole caboodle.

Problem is, you need what is known as a drift - a steel part that's just smaller than the bearing to push the bearing out. Sometimes you need a press, but a skilled mechanic can do it with patience, a copper hammer and some makeshift drifts he'll have kept just for a day like this.

If you are in a hurry, I suggest you buy another one and kee the old one to overaul in the days ahead. If you have time on your hands, overaul the bearing. Any mechanic shop will have a press and may let you play with it if you ask nicely and take beer.

Consider a nice mechanic's course where that technique is taught.

Whatever you do, don't dump the BB, it is someone's treasure.

A different thought: I had a SRAM (Truvativ) GXP BB go a month or

two ago. Apparently there was a bad batch and I got it swapped

out with no questions.

Is your BB still under warranty?

Thanks for that JM.. bother in law donated the BB to me, warranty is seems has expired as he replaced with a Shimano Hollowtech.. He nows recalls that it was creaking..

Johan, thanks for taking the time answer..

Indeed the whole point of these questions is save what look like perfectly good parts.Wink

I am adept at replacing bearings on my motorbike, but cannot see how to remove the axle in order to 'drift' the bearing out from the inside...

If I ask very nicely, where do i bring the beer..

Mechanics courses are of the budget list of this bike rebuild on a shoestringBig%20smile

I'm always up to a new mechanical challenge. Bring it around and lets see what we can do. It'll help if you can read the bearing codes and bring new bearings along as well.

I'll PM you my address.

Did you guys ever get those bearings replaced? Where did you find them?

I have a the same truvativ powerspline BB and also a Truvativ GXP BB. I have pressed out the bearing but when I went into bearing man with a sample they said it was an uncommon size. Going to open the seal and regrease them if I can and they're not too worn.

I ended up almost destroying the old BB trying to get the collar of to get at the BB, so in the end I bought a new one.. At R190.00 it was easier....

The issue when I pulled mine appart was that there were no bearings in the same dimentions. No one could help me...

Until earlier this week I was looking on TokenProducts seb site and found the EXACT replacement bearings. Aslo asked tokenfreak what a new Token ISIS bb would cost... And at R378... There is not much of a choice but just to by one and be able to replace the bearings later if they give issues.

Geez you tchjops! I am away from the Hub some few hours and I am slandered ...... (thanks Bob, JB et al)!

Allow me to set the record straight, I myself have never opened any of the said MTB fork apparatuses! A N Other hubber unnamed for now (Dirt rider) kindly donated me the said faulty item. He were the one who attempted the service. And no it is not rigid at this time but none of the 'setting' twirly knobs have any effect on the 'performance', but it seems that they never worked from the start so he may indeed also be innocent of all charges that may in fact be brought ......

BTW - I am posting from my cellphone in Sabie so am unable to embellish this post with the required smileys en goeters sorry.
