Velouria Posted July 23, 2008 Share From CyclingNews.com UCI confirms marathon worlds results On Tuesdsay, the UCI confirmed the results of the Commissaires' Panel at the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships in Villabassa, Italy. The panel had relegated Christoph Sauser (Switzerland) to second place, despite the fact that he crossed the finish line in first position, thus awarding the victory to the Belgian rider Roel Paulissen. According to the panel, Christoph Sauser had sprinted in an unauthorized manner. Sauser's team, Specialized Factory Racing, and his National Federation had appealed the decision to the UCI. With the decision, Paulissen keeps his title as 2008 Mountain Bike Marathon World Champion. The Swiss riders Sauser and Urs Hubert are officially second and third respectively. BigGuy Posted July 23, 2008 Share I guess some UCI officials are either too influential (biased?) or too nearsighted. I think there was enough room for Paulissen, but then the bald spectator (leaning WAY over the barriers to get a better look) stuck his head right in front of Paulissen. Paulissen reacted instinctively to avoid a headbashing with granddad (now that would have been spectacular), and thus crashed into Sauser. The UCI should have given them, at the very least, equal first place, or else victory to Sauser. It is not really about who was "stronger" throughout the race, what the hell does that mean? Sean Badenhorst Posted July 23, 2008 Share So wrong! Besides the obvious from the video, I assume none of those UCI officials have actually ever been in a sprint finish themselves so clearly don't understand how it works... If I was Paulissen, I'd hide that medal in a cupboard...
GoLefty!! Posted July 23, 2008 Share Actually Crazy german is right. Sauser is quite out of line in this instance. And the appeal was thrown out so the result stands. There was no contact between Sauser and Paulissen till Sauser fell on top of Paulissen. Paulissen does not hook or ride into Sauser as some have suggested. Not sure how you watched the video Sean but it's pretty clear from the footage that Sauser caused the accident. The decision is correct.
Dirtbreath Posted July 23, 2008 Share Fairies on Fairy Bikes! Can't handle the heat......... What about that lefty,righty,whatever..........in pieces.Just stirring, very disappointing to see such a hard race finish like that. I do however see Crazy German's point. Sauser was pushing against Paulissen who wasn't providing any resistance.

BigGuy Posted July 23, 2008 Share Go Lefty' date=' are you sure you're discussing the same thing we are? [/quote'] GoLefty, you are an obvious Cannondale enthusiast and as such will be biased in favour of Mr Paulissen.
The Crazy German Posted July 23, 2008 Share Go Lefty' date=' are you sure you're discussing the same thing we are? [/quote'] Make sure you have the right video. Quite some footage shows only what happend just before the crash but if you wind a bit more back wou see Sauser almost in the middle of the road and then in two-three moves closing the door and in the end they crash. Clearly making the hole a lot smaller while the opponent is already next to him; And sadly this is not allowed(although some get away with it)
Sean Badenhorst Posted July 23, 2008 Share Saw the start of the sprint where Sauser moves across. Hardly sudden or dangerous and quite common in finishline sprints. I still can't believe they ruled that 'Sauser had sprinted in an unauthorized manner'.

It happens as Crazy German describes. The sprint starts in the middle of the road, Sauser snaps to the right forcing Paulissen with him. they don't actually touch and it appears that SAuser loses the back wheel and falls on top of Paulissen. Hence the decision to remove Sauser from the top step of the podium was the correct one. It's hard sometimes to do or see the right thing when emotion clouds your vision. Sauser was a little too desparate for this win and that made him take his actions a step too far.I'm sure after he reviews the video he will see what he did wrong. the appeal was thrown out too. The full lenght highlights now sems to have been removed from YouTube (that copyright thing again)

Have you ever been in a sprint before? How does one 'lose the back wheel and fall'? I'm sure after he reviews the video he will see what he did wrong.Ummm, Sauser was the one that put the video in the public domain and encouraged people to watch it! It's hard sometimes to do or see the right thing when emotion clouds your vision. This from someone that lurks behind the Hub name of GoLefty? I have no emotional attachment to either of these riders and actually respected them both equally until this incident. I also don't own a Specialized or a Cannondale...
