Shimano Brake Fluid is a mineral oil based product. it is similar to the hydraulic fluid used in power steering systems, fork lifts etc etc.

You will need to get the viscosity right since if it's too viscous the brakes will be slow to react and if too light the lever will blow throught the travel giving you no modulation.

It's also a pretty high grade of mineral oil in the HVI (high viscosity index) range.

A 2.5wt fork oil may work but it may also do fork oil..

Thank Lefty , now what does that mean in english ? Should I go and find the viscose rating on the bottle of Shimano fluid and try and get hydrolic fluid with same density .

Seal Meat has Excellent

Nutritional Value

Seal meat has been a traditional meal of coastal communities

of Newfoundland & Labrador and the High Arctic for centuries.

Once cooked in traditional recipes such as seal flipper

pie, seal meat has now found it?s way into the kitchens

of many chefs and prepared in various dishes to be served

on the white tablecloths of their dining rooms.

The nutritional value of seal meat make it an ideal meal

for today?s health conscious consumer, a fact not lost

with those who have traditionally consumed seal meat as

a regular dietary item. Seal meat is very low in fat and

a very good source of many essential dietary nutrients including;

protein, calcium, iron, magnesium, and vitamin B12. It is

a very healthy choice of red meat, given the fact that it

is raised in the wild and not artificially enhanced and

force-grown as with many of our beef, pork and poultry products

currently available.

Very interesting ' date=' now for how long must I boil the seal before I get Mineral oil outta it ?[/quote']

Seal oil is made from the

blubber or fat next to the skin of the seal. The blubber and skin is cut off the skin, cut into

strips and store in seal pokes or tins.

If left where warm or during the summer, it renders itself.

From this you have the seal oil.

I should think it would render itself rather smelly.

Only if your get her drunk enough to put out.

The ROI on that one is negative.

I have done some service work on Magura hydraulic clutches on MX Bikes. They only use mineral oil and if other oils are used, the seals (black rubber and not black blubber ones) swell beyond use along with the diaphragm. Don?t be tempted to throw in DOT anything brake fluid, it WILL cost you.

Good luck trying to find the Visco rating on the Shimano bottle. I checked, nothing there. I emailed the technical manager at Shimano Europe, he doesn't know. They buy the product in pre bottled. They won;t tell me anyway cos they want me to buy Shimano Brake oil. Either way, buying a larger quantity does not save you anything. Mineral oil absorbs water over time, not as fast as DoT Brake Fluids but it does. This brings the boiling point down and affects brake performance.

I jus buy the small bottle and use it all and bin the bottle afterward.

I just remembered this topic, and checked the Zinn book. They pretty much echo what's been said here: Use the fluid that's specific for your components, otherwise you may suffer seal failure. Shimano is one of the ones that use a mineral oil.
