marshalls are there to direct riders....it's against the law for them to even stop cars, unless they are instructed, on the spot, by a traffic official, or via pre-race official channels (further, formal routing rules require: (indelible) arrows, (trained) marshalls, (accurate) maps, and (empowered) lead vehicles.)

my understanding : marshals are there to warn traffic of an event taking place. cyclists should know the route and be directed by route markers. if cyclists are required to stop by traffic signs / signals then a traffic official must be be placed there to stop traffic and the marshals should be there to assist.

marshals should not be at a turn or intersection waving flags and cheering on the participants but metres away from the turn to warn motorists of the event.

i'm interested in taking part in gravel races , do the GRAVEL race rules allow for Mtb's , if so , is this not contrary to the spirit of gravel racing?

i did a bit of scratching around , this was lifted off UCI Gravel World Series

Bikes

Riders may use any type of bike (road bike, mountain bike, city bike, hybrid bike, cross bike, etc.) with the exception of tandem or recumbent bikes. time trial road bikes are also forbidden. During the UCI Gravel World Championships, all bikes should have dropped handlebars.  It’s not possible to participate in the UCI Gravel World Championships with a mountain bike.

Can someone please explain to me what the spirit of gravel is? If you say tequila I won't laugh

If road is wine, MTB is beer then gravel must surely be whiskey
