I think it is as what was said above, depends on teh bike geometry.

I went from 110mm to 80mm stem and at the same time went from 440mm to 420mm bars on my road bike I cant say I feel the twitchiness you describe.

Yeah okay get that.. i went to 90 from 100(might have been 105 but that seemed weird and maybe i was measuring wrong..)

so stuck a 90 and richard the bike fit guy was happy with it.. i then went to ruan who took over for richard and he suggested the handling wouldn't be affected much..

i tried an 80 and it didnt make me feel good.. but the reach was good, it was comfy.. ill try again when im more confident on the bike..

but what i really need is a 53 size frame.. on a 54 now

It was Richard that got me to make the changes

similar situation, I really should be on a smaller frame than what I have.

Im finding this is often the case..

what did he say, short legs for my torso, or the other way around..

but he actually also just rotated my handlebars downwards but then my hoods he moved upwards and inwards slightly.. it improved my reach a hell of a lot..

my follow up was with ruan about a year later.. no issues with him at all.. lovely guy..

but i believe its easier to fit a larger bike than a bike thats too small..

I think each fitter has their own theories and experiences, you can probably got to 3 different fitters and get 3 different fits.

It really depends on the bike. Many modern geo gravel bikes come with 70 or 80mm stems. The bike bike radar voted as best road bike a year or two ago comes with an 80mm stem in a size large. Head tube angle, reach, fork off set all play a role.

I want to come back here though for a second.. what bike was that.? Aero bike or endurance bike.?  it possible that it had longer wheelbase that stabilized it despite the short stem maybe.?

Discussing this might be a better use of our time.? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤣

My take on this is once you know the differences each brake hood design brings to your “reach” on the bike you have to co wider its impact on your overall position on the bike as well. Some hoods are longer but the palm is supported further back which can actually shorten the real reach. Feel is a good way to determine if the fit is an improvement but that feel should be gauged after an hour in the saddle once the placibo of change has abated

Hoods do change and have. Example the new SRAM is 5mm longer than previous and shimano from Di2 11 to 12 is also longer at 4m.

the difference of 8000 to di2 you asked is 8mm in length

Thanks, I was wondering if going for the new sram red shifters would mean I'd need shorter stem, looks like it's a yes !

Well yeah i had these old 105 shifter when i did my first fitting.. big bulky things.. they packed up and i managed to get ultegra R8020 i think.. also made a big difference to my reach..

That may have been too cryptic.

One is full of bluster and hot air.

The other is a master of his craft.
