Everybody wants to race at optimum haematocrit levels- Hence the doping.

It is only natural according to my mind for somebody who is sitting with a heamatocrit level of 46% to want to up it to just within the legal limit.

Some guys get it right  by high intensity workouts at anaerobic levels or at high altitude training.

Some guys never get there.

Why not allow guys autologous blood transfusions . Everybody's haematocrit is 50%.

Problem solved

46% is pretty high for normal range, most ppl sit at between 41-53% - If you are at 46% you only got 4points to go, the guy sitting at 41% has 9point to add, guess which one will win:-P So even if you do make it legal, the playing field will still not be level imho. Marius2008-10-09 05:08:53

Because uninformed riders like TooHot is going to buy CERA online and overdose or transfuse blood from a horse.......

was this statement really necessary?

The problem is that when a person starts doing something and it works and they feel good, then they will always want to go a bit further...It will never work and the playing field will never be level.

46% is not high. These are normal ranges:

At Joburg:

Men: 43-55, women 37-49 %

At sea level:

Men: 42-52, women 37-47 %

Raising all to 50% would not level the playing field. The risks of blood doping are far too high. Taking CERA is much safer, but still a bad idea.

So you want to put the guy that's genetically superior at a disadvantage?<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

That?s like the main Alpha Male of the Lion pride telling the weaker Male Lion it is ok to mate with some of the dominant lionesses because he feels sorry for him?LOL

Just a question, what did the guys use in the old days ( talking about early 1900's to around Merckx's time ) to dope with ? Was it stuff like painkillers, because you needed it for those 300 km stages smiley2.gif

Hey The Pirate nice to see you albeit briefly at Kyalami yesterday. On to your question - they used brandy, amphetamines, cocaine, opium - anything they could lay their grubby paws on. Quite hectic to say the least! (Imagine riding your bike after chowing a few Eckies and a coupla double branners and cokes...and a line. Skrew that I'd be on the couch playing Playstation or busting some moves on the dance floor...)

I wonder if they had Vicks with them when they rode on the Eckies....

I am in the US at the moment and I met a guy  here that used to race for the Canadian national team a good few years ago.

So we were like talking and I asked him why he stopped? He told me that after one of the blood transfusions he had a bad experience in a race.. he blanked out and crashed.. broke his shoulder etc. and after that he got a really good job offer outside of cycling and decided to move on as he took a while to recover.

Lol the funny thing was we were not even talking about doping. So i was like "Blood transfusions?" and he was like yeah it helped with our performance.

He did not mention doping or anything, he spoke about it as i would talk about cytomax. I gathered that is what they did back then before it was illegal.
