I think it is awesome...as now millions and millions around the world are now taking a fresh look at his lyrics (myself included) and realising or being reminded again what an exceptional poet he was.

just take that extract i posted above....mention Mr Tambourine man and 99% of people will sing:

"Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me

I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you"

yet the verse that follows in its entirety....

Take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time
Far past the frozen leaves
The haunted frightened trees
Out to the windy bench
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate
Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

In high school we had an english teacher that would use Dylan's lyrics in our poetry / prose sections - needless to say I enjoyed those lessons.

I mentioned in another thread that song lyrics are not generally considered poetry in the academic sense. A theme with which I agree.

I'm very pleased that Dylan is considered the exception.

Unusual rhythms, No clichéd rhyming tropes. Lovely.

Edit: Get the reply right dammit!

so do you agree with him being considered and awarded the Nobel prize for literature?

I remember we had this discussion then - and was going to post yesterday to that thread, but I decided to post it here. I think lyrics can be poetry but there are very few who might write poetic lyrics worthy of a nobel prize. Dylan and Cohen are probably the only two

I do indeed.

And, I agree with your inclusion of Mr Cohen.

They have abilities which transcend the lyricist.
