So yesterday I became a victim of the most heinous of crimes

in Cape Town to

date. Yep, some bast@rd nicked my bike.  In the light of day outside the

Woolworths head office in

Corporation

Street. These guys are fast and the have all the

tools with them to "crack a bike rack".

What now?  I have insurance but this will be my second claim in 18 months

and I think the insurance dudes will be suspecting that I am pulling an upgrade

scam. Why do we always feel like criminals when we claim from

insurance???  I think I would feel less guilty cruising round town and

nicking someone else's bike. Anyway, as much as new bike sounds cool, I'm happy

with the bike I had and if I can get it back.......

So these perps must be off-loading the bikes somewhere, the question is

where.  I have contacted all the cash crusaders in Cape Town and the surrounding suburbs and

also registered the theft on there web site.

Anyway, before I come back to earth and realise that I have to face the

assessor "Eye to Eye" is there a bike shop(s) in CT that deals in the

second hand bicycle market???

They must have had a bolt cutter.  They cut the padlock and sliced the strapping. Quick.  It was less the 20 minutesfrom when I parked to returning to the car.

bolt-cutters are standard issue for a bike thief.

Years ago I had a bike stolen from UCT. Police pulled the guy off as he was cycling down main road on my Cannondale, with the bolt-cutters hanging out his backpack. When I phoned to report the theft they already had my bike!

That is why I very seldom use my bike rack.  Put the bike in the boot.  It is less obvious in there.  One of the primary reasons I bought my Jetta.  It has a proper size boot.  Can fit two bikes in it.

And should I have to make use of the bike rack.  I won't leave the car unattended.

Sorry to here of your loss.  Stuff the bloody assesor.  I was thinking about it last night.  If I ever have to face an assesor again I will have a recorder on when having a discussion with him.

There is little more frustrating than when people take stuff that does not belong to them. Sorry man.

Recently a bike was stolen in PE. This bike was very expensive and I am sure there can not be many of them arround. At that time there were only two or three in PE. As far as I am aware this bike has not been found.

This makes me think that there are people that know what they are looking for and have a market for them. I do not believe that the bikes are stolen to be sold to, or ridden by any man on the street.

Maybe this is becoming like car hijackings. There might be a sindicate that steal bikes on order.

Sorry to hear about the theft.

The main 2nd hand bike shop would be Avron's Cycle Traders in Salt River.

Give him a call on 021 448 0812.

There's a guy (Neil) in Wynberg who also deals with 2nd hand bikes, he's always advertising on Gumtree. Get him on 076 999 5370

Both tend to keep an eye out for stolen bikes, so give them a call.

There's only one that I know of in CT that does decent 2nd hand bikes, but he's a top bloke and wouldn't have anything to do with fencing stolen gear... will pm details, let him know the story

I had the assessor come round to see me after 10 days in hospital. I'm in bits and pieces as well as the bike, and the silly bugger asks me if this was the first accident the bike was in, and could the damage be caused by someone else. He was then given a quote to fix the bike by my LBS and then he held onto the quote for 2 weeks before submitting it to the insurance company.

I have (maybe stupidly, maybe not) never had any of my bikes insured. I have just bought one with around 30K replacement value, what could I expect to pay to have it insured? Would it be best to specify it under household insurance or do it via a company that specialises in bike insurance? Any advice would be welcome.
