In fact throughout their time together on the track' date=' Schumacher and Senna were within hundredth's of a second of each other in cars that were quite technologically crude compared to the William's and Ferrari of the time.

[/quote']

If I'm not mistaken they were in Benneton and Mclarens respectively, which were the dominant cars of that time.

What do you mean they were technologically crude compared to ferrari, which did not have a competive car until after shumi came on board.

Or am i misunderstanding you here?

You misunderstand and have confused timelines.

I mention 1991 as the year of comparison.

That year MacLaren raced the MP4/5c and the the MP4/6.

Benetton raced the B191.

In simple terms the McLaren MP4/6 was powered by a v12 Honda displacing 3.5L. It as heavy, thirsty and its drivability was shocking. Senna prefered the V10 but Honda was committed and he had to endure the V12. The McLaren still had a mechanical gearbox and clutch.

The Benetton B191 as driven by Schumacher from the Italian GP was fitted witha 3.5L Ford HB V8. This was not the Zetec unit he used to win the title in 1994, but a mechanically updated DFV which has its design origin in 1966!! The B191 also had a mechanical gearbox and clutch.

The Ferrari F643 as raced by Alain Prost had the required by Italian law V12 engine fitted with a 7speed semi automatic gearbox with auto clutch.

The Williams FW-14 was fitted with Renaults Rs15 V10 unit with pneumatic valve actuators, Semi auto gearbox and clutch. Both the Ferrari and the Williams were state of the art at the time.

Another interesting bit of information is that the Williams and Benetton chassis were moulded in a more advanced manner than the ferrari and Maclaren but the Benetton was overweight.

In order for Schumacher and Senna to keep their cars in the fight they needed to work much harder behind the wheel to win.

That Senna still won the championship is largely due to the Williams lack of reliability that year. The following year they won something like 12 out of 16 races.

rhalim, please stop talking out your @rse!!!! LH needs to surpass Shumi's achievements before you could ever start to put him in the same league as Tiger. Dead

Don't you think it was also a little premature for him to compare himself to Senna?????

I have a feeling he included colour of the skin in that statement, which excludes Shumi.  Hopes masood does'nt see this

Sorry had to step out for a minute.

Cool you know your stuff, to be honest i didnt realise that their(mclaren) car wasnt on parr with the other teams. I thought that since they were the first to use a carbon fibre chassis in the 80's they'd stay ahead of their game.

You know that the MP in their car's code originally stood for Marlboro Project

Vettel is Michael Schumacher's protege.

It's not only his single race win. It's how he carries himself. Talks in interviews. Really just a hunch but you can see the confidence in his eyes.

I think i'll consider being a Vettel fan next year:)

Hamilton's a good driver...but his attitude sucks...i like a good sportsman first of all and if he's got skill to go with that...great!

I mean...going and comparing YOURSELF to the sport's greatest ever drivers...hmmm....die seuntjie se kop raak bietjie te groot!! Let other people speculate and say you're in Shummi or Senna's league...eish! I hate arrogance!

So yeah...he can be 7 time world champ - i still won't like him.

Oh...and someone said that Loeb's a better driver than all of these guys...haha...that's what my dad also always says. I tend to want to agree, because wow - he can handle a car like no one else...but still...two entirely different ball games. Think he'll take a little while to get used to a F1 car and vice versa for the F1 drivers..

While my posts in this thread might indicate I am a F1 nut (and I sort of am), rallying is my life and I will do anything to stay a part of this sport.

I agree with the statement in bold, purely because of the intensity of rallying versus trackracing. You travel blindly (ie. you have never seen the track before) relying solely on the notes read to you by your co-driver. Now I have navigated non-competitively and can safely say it is one of the hardest things to do. Your seat is so low you cant see out and you only now whether you are in the correct place (notes wise) by the feedback you get from your seat (and to the unexperienced eye the notes are best described as gibberish).

Now the driver has to concentrate on the notes read to him and also keep an eye on uncalled obstacles (maybe rocks thrown onto roads or roaming cattle). And if you've seen how busy the driver is on the onboard cameras you will know what I mean. The "track" changes constantly and you have to adapt instantly.

Sure the speed of F1 is much higher but you lap the track say 70 times and on a good day there isn't much change in the track conditions (rain spoils it somewhat) so you can become "accustomed" to it. I think it was on the last WRC event where they showed a sign post indicating a 40km/h speed limit and Seba's telemetry showed a max of 180mk/h on that stretch, which puts the speed into context.

That said, while I don't dislike Seba, I am a big Petter supporter, although the lad has lost it somewhat these days. The two Ford guys are real stars as well (Mikko and Jarri-Mati).

If you haven't really watched a rally before, tonight at 21:00 on SS2 (I think) they are showing this weekends Japanese Rally.

DeadDeadDeadDead

I have been a F1 FAN since 1975 ..

This has been the saddest day

WHEN A I D I O T F O O L LIKE HAMILTON WINS,

I WILL NEVER WATCH F1 AGAIN

ITS THE SADDEST DAY FOR REAL SPORTMAN, AND REAL DRIVERS

HAMILTON IS A WAANNNAAA BEEE DRIVER

Divan...i can't even begin to imagine how hard the job of the co-driver has to be!! One of the things i want to do before i die is to ride in a car with a Raleigh driver though.

Very true re.F1 being easier because of them doing one track over and over and over again without really any obstacles.

I can't really decide which i like more though...as raleighs are more based on fastest times to complete the course, which basically is like a TT...the cool thing about F1 is the excitement of guys passing each other/team strategies and the ever present pit lane dramas.

But hey...guess i'm just crazy about cars in general..so i'll watch everything. F1, Raleighs, on the odd Saturday night, the local stock cars...whatever:)

See you live in the Western Cape...have you ever gone and watch the Swartland Raleigh?? we've gone twice...usually a great day out

Yes I have been going to the Swartland for quite some time and I help out there as well (our rally club is the organisers of the event). I also attend all the regional rallies in the Western Cape as well (if you want to meet the guys and maybe get the chance to ride with them, regionals is the place to do it.)

EDIT to add: I also just love racing in general! Rallying just more than the others

Zeepee,

MP4 is in fact an acronym for McLaren Project 4.

Project 4 was a team Ron Dennis had put together to run in F2 with John Barnard in the 70's and early 80's. He and his backers wanted to get into f1 and Marlboro was sponsoring McLaren Cars F1 project at the time. McLaren were technically incompetant. Marlboro had the money and an F1 entry and Ron Dennis had the people to make an F1 team work. John Barnard was Ron's Engineer at the time and he designed the MP4/2, the first carbon fibre moncoque chassis. It dominated 1984 (Niki Lauda) and 1985 (Alain Prost).

In 1986 they used a revised version of the car the MP4/2b which carried over to 1987 as the MP4/2c. The 1986 championship was won by Prost as well. In 1987, South African born Gordan Murry designed the Mp4/4, the most successfull GP car in F1 histroy for the 1988 season.  Ferrari's F2004 beat it's number of wins in a season in 2004. Interestingly the F2004 was  designed by a team led by Rory Byrne, also a South African.

So thats McLaren as we know it today. John Barnard subsequently left for Ferrari where he designed the F639 Semi auto gearbox car which won first time out at Brazil in 1989.

Alain Prost then competed against SENNA for the 1990 championship in the F640.
