There is actually a new act, the Nationl Road Traffic Act, act 93 of 1996 which can be found here - http://www.info.gov.za/view/DownloadFileAction?id=70930

The bit you are looking for is not contained in the act, but in the regulations regarding use of pedal cycles, issued in terms of the NRSA. You can find it on the internet here http://www.transport.gov.za/library/regulations/1999/roadregs10.html and the bit you are looking for is in section 311.

I am proud to say that I probably transgress at least one of these regulations every day I ride my bike and I am sure there are very few Traffic Police Officials who know about them.

before you start quoting road regulations ext, there are three things to take note of:

firstly, much of the regulation, section 311 dealing with a bicycle is meant for commuting. ?Much of it when read makes sense except for the parts where it is obvious that there was a "lost in translation" moment such as the part you quote, where the formulators english was just not good enough to discribe what he wanted to say. ?It is obvious that you cannot obey that instruction, when stoping and starting ext.

Secondly, section 311 cannot be read in isolation of the rest of the regulation. ?Read the entire regulations, and you will see that if all road users obeyed the regulation thet it would be largely possible for cyclists to commute safely.

lastly, there is another section which, for the purpose of sport, time trials ext gives the MEC, or local traffic department the authority to waiver all the regulations, if the deem it necessary.

So before allowing anyone to "quote" the regulation, ensure that you are able to "counter quote". ?Most of the time people are wanting to score points and not understand the regulations. ?MAny motorist are shocked by the content of the regulation, especially when they realise that they are WRONG

ClapClapClap this is so true - the average motorist has no clue:

- that bicycles and motorbikesa re allowed on the road

- how traffic circles work

- how traffic calming spots work

- how yield signs work

- how to treat an out-of-order traffic light

- how to drive onthe highway (ie they think that there a is a "slow" "medium" and "fast" lane Confused)

and many many many more

Thank you for helping out with the details of the Act.

I had a call at the office from a cyclist who had been involved in a serious accident. There was just dead silence at the other end of the line when I suggested the words to type into Google...

Now he needs to obtain a hard copy, and of-course he needs the exact reference to do that. Good luck man!

cycle to swerve from side to side.

(5) No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall carry thereon any person,

animal or object which obstructs his or her view or which prevents him or her from

exercising complete control over the movements of such pedal cycle.

(6) A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall do so with at least one hand

on the handle-bars of such pedal cycle.

(7) Whenever a portion of a public road has been set aside for use by persons riding

pedal cycles, no person shall ride a pedal cycle on any other portion of such road.

I can safely say I've disobeyed all of these at one time or another.
