look at it from the banks point of view. maybe they dont have the proof anymore. and now you come along saying you want them to pay you back 18mths of premiums. if someone came to me with this story i would be hesitant to pay them back as well

I have the proof. They just convenietly mislaid it, as for the earlier comment re taking any non response as an acceptance, think I'm gonna send them a bill for checking my bank statements for errors, then charge them R1750 per hour, mail the bill and if they don't respond in writting in say 14days, well I accept as their acceptanceBig%20smile

THE BANKS HAVE NO POINT OF VIEW. In order to have a point of view you need morals, and that immediatly disqualifies all banks.

My best mate is a well known builder in Durban. He's fond of giving his opinion, very strongly, then finishing off by saying "trust me, I'm a builder", with a straight face.LOL

Re doctors. I know that doctors normally have hectic hours and lives, and do their best most of the time. I would not like to be in a profession where my routine decisions involve life and death. That's why a doctor mate of mine says that he should have been an opthalmologist or a dermatologist, because you never get woken up in the middle of the night by some hysteric complaining of an ear ache which he thinks is a symptom of a kidney stone, or something else stupid, and patients walking into your practice demanding attention then taking months to pay the bill.

But you get the occasional one, like the physician who left his patient on the exam table, naked, while he talked to a locum on the phone in his office about doing the hospital rounds while he was in Greece on holiday. Then coming back into the room and not diagnosing the spastic colon, which a GP did later that day within one minute! His bill was NOT paid.

I am not sure but had a similar problem where insurance companies were cheaper than the bank. Standard Bank refuses to cancel the insurance on your property. If I remember correctly it had something to do with them not having control over your payments to your insurer and if you default and your insurance lapse and the property is damaged there is no insurance to cover it something like worst case scenario if fire destroys it and them protecting their asset....

I don't think it's allowed any more. If you can proof that you have the insurance somewhere then they must cancel theirs. The clever way they get around it is by puting it as a clause in your contract that you will take their insurance. If you change it you need a new contract. smiley19.gif

Yup!! Called coercive selling! Delgado2008-11-20 11:02:58

I would love you to share your knowledge with us ewep so that we all can learn how doctors screw people

wpdeb, you CLEARLY have a very sensitive outlook on this one.  Soneone maybe touch a nerve??  But ok, you asked, here goes:

5 x "specialists" (Neuro surgeons and orthopeadic  surgeons) sending patients for x-raysthat was not needed.  Decent kickbacks and the patient pays (even though indirectly through med/aid.  Still my money).  All 5 got off with a slap on the wrist (community work).  1 did the full thing, 1 did half, 2 ignored it and 1 ran away to Oz.  There is another investigation going into one of the same docs, for the same sh|t.

A well known doctor in the Vaal charging 3 times his private patient rate to medical aid clients.  According to him it's not the patient that has to fork out, and anyway, why should he wait 10-15 working days for his money (even though after my visit he was paid within 3 working days).

A doctor in Alberton (Brackendowns) prescribing meds to a patient that was not even for the condition (the sister happened to see it and the pharmacist confirmed).  This is possible, except that the doc wanted to dispense the meds himself.

A ortoped surgeon forcing patients to ICU when it's not needed for the patient & procedure combination.  The patients stayed in ICU for 2 days and all docs and ICU staff agreed that it was not neccessary.

Specialists charging patients for ops which they don't perform.  The "assistant" for the op does the whole procedure while the specialist does rounds or sees patients at his practice.  The patient/med-aid however gets charged for the specialist and the "assistant".

Doctors forgetting to send bills to the medical aid.  After warning the doc the patient is then held responsible for the bill 12-18 months AFTER the X-Rays.

I did not mention any hospital or doc names.  I however have all the names and for some cases the dates.

ewep, sorry for my late reply but here it is.

The 5 doctors that you mention in point no 1 - very well known case and incidentally happened in the hospital that I work in [must say, before I started there] - you mention that it was for unnecessary XR's but unfortunately that part of your statement is untrue - it was well established in the HPCSA hearing as well the later court hearing that the XR's were indicated and that was well accepted by the judge - what happened there would not have been illegal in any other profession but in the medical profession.

You also state about a doctor charging 3x medical aid rates - that is probably the going rate in most of Johannesburg and most medical aids will pay for that - it is also the ethical rate according to the HPCSA/medical council and is usually not a problem.

I cannot comment on your other statements, but if true, it is clearly unethical.

You have touched a nerve - the medical profession at the moment is under attack from everywhere - government tries to regulate private practice, medical aids try to screw us, patients are abusive and report us to council for the slightest mistake [and yes we do make mistakes, we are only human and medicine is not an exact science]

You get called out at 02:00 in the morning for a patient with an appendicitis and yes doctor the pain has been there for 2 days but I did not have time to come in - then you go to theatre for R1123 to remove the appendix at 04:00 in the morning, you wait up to 6 weeks for your fees to be paid and then patients expect you to be bright and friendly at 07:00 when you do rounds.

I do agree that there are doctors out there who screw patients - but please don't think that everyone is like that - it is like saying all priests are paedophiles just because 1 or 2 enjoyed the choir boys in the dark.

Regards

I fully agree on all you say above.  I was purely stating that a lot of medical practitioners (all fields!!!) aren't always the saints they want to be seen as!  I have a wife who is/was a nursing sister, so I know about December standby, night shifts, long hours, coming home late because of resus etc.

I know you know her as I've just realised who you are.  I will PM you shortly.
