Degreasing

Moab

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I need to clean 3 bikes tomorrow and its not something I am good at.

I heard a few years ago that paraffin works as a good degreaser for chain and cassette. Is this true? Is there something else that is good and cheap?

Thanks

Parafin is not biodegradable but does work well. Like I said on the Review pages, I've used a house product called MagicMaids Braai and Grill cleaner. It's an orange bottle with Madam & Eve cartoons on. It worked for my bike. But I use Motorex Dry Lube so that might also be why it worked so well.

I like good old fashion Wynns engine degrease for chain and casette, but i take then off the bike first.

Have also tried an aerosol spray degrease, worked great, but very expensive for the amount of cleaning i got out of it.

how often do you take the cassette off?

Depends on how dirty the bike is. MTB generally bi-weekly unless i have managed to keep it clean. I seem to manage to get dirt in to all sorts of parts. The only way I seem to get it properly clean is doing that. Also take the crank off every now and then to get the stupid grinding sound out.

Road, cluster comes off bi weelky aswell depending on how much rain and dirt i get thrown up.

I am a bit of a clean freak so...

Seriously, something is amiss if you have to take your cassette off that often to clean your bike.

Actually, reading most of these threads, it's not surprising a lot of you guys have so much **** with bikes and components, seeing as you fiddle un-necessarily with them so much.

JB needs to line the lot of you up and smack you all with a heavy tome of common sense...

Prepsol FTW!! It may not be the cheapest but in my opinion the best. Then Liquid Wax for the chain. and your done.

Prepsol will dull and stain if it is left on too long. Just spray on and spray off.

Yeah, most degreasers and detergents will dull the frame if left on too long...
