Low or high cadence?

Recommended Posts

OK, I know that every cyclist has his own comfortable cadence and one that suits him/her, but what is too low?  I am asking because I went on a training ride with my club and two old blokes came up to me and told me to increase my cadence as I need to get "supple".  I got the same thing at track training. Are they just old school or do I need to spin big time during pre-season training?

When I say I have a low cadence, I mean 80-90, not lower.  I feel like telling them to mind their own business, but I just want to be sure...

I think that Armstrong fellow has lots to answer for!  I miss Ule.

Maybe they were refering to your speed and not your cadence.
Nope, they saw my cadence because I was working at the frontWink

i used to ride at around 90 cadence but these days i'm closer to 100, but i've trained specifically to up my cadence in the hope of increasing my endurance. dont know if thats a logical approach or not

Methinks they wanted to suck on you faster then. Wacko

I'm of the slow cadence variety. Slow speed too. I think this is where a serious conversation will be picked up by the power reading peeps.

I know, I've been converting to powerism myself and I've seen the "Muscle fibre recruitment is a function of power, not cadence" statement, so I am really getting annoyed when people tut-tut my cadence!  Surely if I keep my power constant and make sure my cadence isn't too low (sub-80), all will be fine and I will get more benefit from the training?  All this spinning like a windmill is getting on my nerves.

If you are very fit you can push high cadence and let your hart and lungs do the work, but if you are not that fit and rely on leg muscles your legs will feel the pain.

As soon as I increased my cadence my speed went up and i could stay with the bunch and my chain and gears lasted longer.

I hope this make sense.Embarrassed

if you are comfortable then go one gear easier and then that is the ultimate sweet spot from my experience

I know, I understand if we are doing some track drills and everyone's on the small chainring, but out on the road doing a group ride?!  Come on, let me ride at my cadence!  I nearly told them to do what that guy told Poison Ivy to do!!!!!!

smiley36.gif smiley36.gif smiley36.gif smiley36.gif hahahaha on the track it is a completely different story it will always be the guy that has the best and most efficient legspeed that will win but out on the road conditions change and you get things called hills and everyone climbs at thier own pace (some too fast for words) and in the end the guy on the road that K@Ks off the most wins thats the simple truth and cant tell you how many times i have experienced it!!!!

save the heavy grinding for the hills...keep the cadence up for the flats Smile

if it was your coach telling u this for a specific reason, then listen...else who cares!

Half our group push, half spin and the other half are in charge of the mathematics involved.

So far no-one can tell which is the better option, except that the guys pushing the big blade battle a lot more on the hills.

Still don't have a valid reason for all this spinning during base training...
