Been intrigued by the epic debate and the occasional reference to hardcore riding.  I photographed this guy during the transbaviaans last year - yes, he did ride 230km on a rigid steel 24 speed (OK he did have semi slicks - maybe that did help!).  Rode with an unwavering slow cadence and I remember seeing him coming into the bergplaas feeding stop when we were leaving - after he had done most of the tough climbing, and even though it had been wet (river crossings) and cold he was still going along as per the photo - HARDCORE!

Dude : The advantages or living in the Karroo

your feet is like a hardcore climbing shoe, hard as rock and thick as steel. Its quick dry, very aero, style option available in different colors.

This guy never wore shoes in his life, for him he was just cruising to town, and somehow ended up in the raceLOL

230km in en 230 out for shopping - and now you guys are making a fuss over this....

HAHA - still looks pretty hardcore (looks like some American survival show - over dramatic)

Well done for this dude - saw him at the start

Ignorance Is bliss...Wink

In high school there was a guy who would ride to the beach (buffelo bay- knysna) on his BMX with his 1960's style Longboard under his arm, He rode from Segefield which was about 15-20km away. ( Back then I could hardly get that board to the water by myself, It must have been 25kg's and 9'' long.

He was hard, surfed without a suit and I cant remember but he probably did it Bareoot aswell.

These guys seriously think were all a bunch of panzys and they probably cant justify spending R1000 on a bike... "you dont need it!!"

In a way The Innocense Is beautifull. And Im not mocking him. The guy must have felt very selfconcious as "everyone else looked like pro's"

No really. hats off dude. Would love to hook him up some kit.

No shoes but a cycling pants.   Makes you realise where the real sensitive parts are.

Look at the legs --- are they shaved ? Must wonder if this is a Karroo boytjie or just a crazy Geeermannnnn

He was ahead a few times - as it was my first baviaans and I was lugging a camera along so I thought I should stop and take some shots - then charge after the team again.  Could only do that for the first 100k's then realised if I wanted to finish I should conserve some energy - hence the long stop at bergplaas!!

As I recall from the TransB 2008 this Oom lives in Durbanville, Cape Town.

He grew up on a farm - obviously he walked barefoot for hundreds of km's in snow storms and swam across raging rivers with no shoes and a short pant.

Worked as a Town Planner and rides kaal voet now - because he can.

Tough Old Man ...

Hairy
