Bikes are expensive' date=' but so is everything else. If you want carbon, titanium etc it's going to cost ya. Unfortunately it is just k@k and betaal Pinch, nobody is ripping anybody else off in general IMHO.[/quote']

If you want carbon, then opt for planet-x frames, as they are pretty well priced.

I'm in the industry. I agree bike prices has gone up but so has everything else also.

Its definately not on to say a retailer is ripping you of because of high prices' date=' most are cutting heavily on markups to make a sale and to just keep head above water.

Do some research see what it cost to get stock in a shop and carry real basic running cost- shops arent there to rip cyclist of. Most shop owners do it because of the passion for the sport.

There are much are better industries to rip people of and make alot of moola.

Why are there so many shops closing the doors if they were making alot of money?

Maybe rather say thank you the next time for service or free knowledge gained from a cycle shop.. If your not happy with the service from a particular shop move on and get one thats good at what they're doing..

Support local it will only make things better for both parties.

Hi guys' date='

I've got a concern and that is on the price of Bicycles in South Africa. Our suppliers and retailers are killing our community and country with this high prices. How do they expect the sport to pick up when when the cyclist cannot even get a good bike, let alone enter a fun ride. Come on guys, let re-think this..... [/quote']

An expensive bike is not needed to be competitive, nice to have but not essential.

Cheap second hand bikes abound.

In my long experience I have found the any bike , no matter how basic, that regularly does 500 to 700km a week is extremely competitive.

Someone earlier mentioned  contact kiwi he sells reasonably priced frames. I bought 2 PLANET X's from him

THEREFORE ; KIWI = PLANET X

Just another thought I was waiting for about a month for a replacement frame, so I had to kick start my 1987 Columbus SLX Battaglin Frame. Ok I do have centaur parts on it, but it was magic to ride. Steven Roach won the TDF on that Frame.

Friends even told me that I rode better on that bike than on my Carbon bike.

Get a good old frame and good second hand parts, if its mechanically sweet its actually beautiful ride.

I have bought (in January) brand new Raleigh RC6000 carbon from LBS for R12k to conquer Argus, which it did. Somebody on this forum was seling them not to long ago for virtualy the same price. It has Mavic wheels, sweet 105 group set, previous season team colors and Raleigh replacement frame waranty. Thanks to the hub I have some carbon bits and pieces on it as well.

Was it expensive?

Being married is EXPENSIVE: my wife wants to take up sowing while I cycle. Her machine of choice if Husqavarna Diamond.... That is like R110k with software and a laptop. What is wrong with the "made in china" stuff from game for R1999????!!!! Has anybody one of those for sale? I am prepared to spend what I paid for my Raleigh.

Another gripe is clothing....how can cycling pants with a little cloth in the middle cost over 500 bucks??? AND I am sure these are made in China! And do not tell me it is the technology of sweat free, breathing materials blah blah...

Verkoop jy polisse ook?????? No I dont. Maybe someone else can help you to buy one- we all get old.

Sooooo jy se dat julle swaarkry...... julle wat fietse verkoop. Not my problem- Get your facts straight. My opinion of what you come up with: You are living in a dreamworld..

Eintlik wat jy se is dat ons die fabrieke wat die fietse maak moet beskuldig want hulle maak die goetters so duur. Not what I said, maybe ask your boss the meaning of recession, Rand/ Dollar, import duties, Wholesaler- retailer etc, maybe he'll see the trend and explain you a few extra terms.. Secondly I dont say sentences with two meanings I'm quite straight to the point.

Bol kek wat jy probeer aan ons verkoop dink ek. I sell bikes maybe you should stop riding the it if you think its that low.. Ek koop so te se AL my groot goed by www.chainreactioncycles.com en met die geld wat ek spaar sal ek die klein goedjies wat ek locally nodg kry aankoop.

For Chilli Palmer

Plse go to PPA and repeat what you've said here - you're completely misinformed and it's a different topic altogether. I can tell you where the money goes to, but do your homework before you make unfounded allegations - accounts for everything in life!

About bike and part prices - I think we all agree with you.

But if you wanna keep up with the Jones's I guess it's more difficult. Just look at the starting line-ups of races - everybody's looking at someone else's bike and muttering to himself...uhm nice, very nice, rich, spoiled, brat, doesn't make him/her faster, "al dra 'n aap 'n goue ring hy bly huh bleddie lelike ding" etc. etc.

Some of the best looking and most expensive bikes out there will never  do an Argus sub three!....

...it's not about the bike Smile

We must take better care of our bikes and support the shop where it's a pleasure to spend time and money - cycling is about fun.
