Does this mean that anything that can be worn or considered as a clothing item have a bit of duty attached to it? From what I can see, everything else is excluded.....am i correct in saying that?

Clothing does pay duty at 40%

The code 6215.00/8 is a commodity code for customs, tells them what the article is. The first 4 digit of the code are used world wide.

For example 6101 - 61?? Knitted or crocheted clothing

6201 - 62?? not knitted or crocheted

Also your knee and elbow pads go to 9506 and are duty free

Vat is calculated at

Cost of goods + 10% =R ? x14% = Vat

Eg

R1000 + 10% =R1100 x14% = R154.00

Shoes fall under

6403.19/9           30% Duty

OK. I just bought some Plastic pegs for my BMX, from a mail order in the US. Was charged R574.56 total incl shipping via USPS. How much am I going to pay at the post office to get my stuff? Just 14% or is it 10% + 14%?

If the item is duty free, then you will pay an effective 15,4% VAT, however if the item has duty, then that VAT effective % will increase.

The classification of goods in the HS tariff is not always clear-cut.  For example, there are codes which are specific to items and the classification is clear and there are codes which are more general in nature.  I would think that the plastic pegs would be classified as parts of bicycles under the Chapter 87 code, but they may also be seen as articles of plastic not elsewhere specified or included which would make them claddifiable within the scope of heading 3926.90 (which if I recall correctly has a 20% duty liability.)

The poeskantoor does sometimes charge an "admin fee" but it's usually only about R20 or so.

Good luck...
