Another factor in paly is the cost of special steel and alloys, which I buy on a daily basis. The cost of raw materials peaked at aroun October last year, and has been on a steady decline. Processed alloys are down by almost 15%, stainless roughly 10%. I would think this factor is very much contributing to the price decrease, which is smart business.

Lay people are generally brand loyal, so if it comes time for an upgrade, they will look to the brand they have currently. Raleigh is looking at drawing in new cyclists, especially those looking at commuting in the current economy, and new cyclists without fail will go for the cheapest option.

I was "told" in the beginning of the year that the 09 prices are high because they have tons of 08 stock that needs to be moved. This will encourage people to settle for an older model and the 09 prices will drop as soon as the 08 stock is gone.

If you look at this link you will see that the RRP of a number of models has been significantly reduced' date=' which leads the cynic in me to wonder if they were taking the p1ss just a little to begin with...

What I'm saying is, if the rand and everything else was to blame to push the price of an RC1000 to R6 800, how is it now possible to sell it at R4 700 without making a loss? [/quote']

They lowered mark up and the Rand has improved quite a bit the last couple of months.

But yes, they uped their mark-up quite a bit in 09. Hopefully leason learned. Haven't heared a Raleigh crack in a while so I take it TWO lessons learned.

porky is 100 % correct ... they need to sell bikes and do not give a stuff about us the end user

Why do they need to care about the end user/customer?  They are supplying a solid bike at a price realistic in the current market.  Sounds like good business to me.  The price was too high for the current economic climate so they dropped the prices.  Simple.  Get over it and be happy!

If they hope to stay in business, they had better "care about the end user" because they are the ones buying the product.

Your comment assumes the public buy on price only, and as long as the price is right sales will follow, when in reality this is not always true, a sale is driven by many factors like, sentiment, emotion, locality, a positive buying experience, service, support mental history of the product, percieved quality and of course price.

Their fast track "backwards" shows two things (a)They overestimated their dominance in the market and the willingness of consumers to pay their price based on this fact, and / or  (b) even worse, they seriously underestimated the severity of the downturn.

Good news' date=' but it just goes to show how we're getting ripped off from the start.

Now if only Merida or Silverback would follow suit ...

And GT, Specialised, Fuji, Giant etc etc

It is interesting! In two years ago we can buy top of range bicycles for R25000, but now they are over R40000. I think it is mad! I realised that lots of us rather stay with their bikes than buy new one.

I turned a Raleigh over the other day, to see if it was a boy or a girl, ant the was a "Made in China" sticker on the BB shell.

I wonder why they hide it under the BB. GT, Schwinn, Fuji and all the others have it on their head tubes in plain view.

The Second hand market is going to boom in a few months time as older stock is almost depleted in most shops around SA.

All the Vets / older guys (Who can afford expensive stuff) will make more on their older bikes when they upgrade because the new prices is just to crazy for what you get.

RC 8000 - 40K and you get Sram Force --- mad I tell you.

So I'll post all the prices here and in a month or 2 one can search this again and see if the prices changed or not ....

I don't care if the bikes are made from Ti or in the same factory as Ferraris. Just because it has the name "Raleigh" on it suggest it should be 5-10k cheaper then the next cheapest brand with the same specs.
