Porky, if your wife's bike was a simple old-school delivery bike (or R900 cheapie from xxx department store), she could probably get away with R80 tyres. Believe it or not, you do get ones for R80.

Your bakkie's R375 ones are an unfair comparison. They're not performance oriented, they're not lightweight, etc. We all know that in the bicycle world, cost is directly proportionate to weight loss :-)

Not all car tyres are cheap. Have you seen the price of a set of treads for a Range Rover Sport recently? It'll set you back around R35k.

At least she bought quality. Personally I think its one of the best tyres if not the best to buy.I have been using Conti's for more than 10 years. Might get a puncture once in a blue moon. smiley2.gif

Recently bought a pair of Conti GP4000s with the black chili compound off CRC. Came to R800 all-in. In my book, they are just about the best clinchers you can buy.

I also got cheap-but-good Schwalbes for training. They were under R200 each.

Don't pay stupid shop prices. Club together with mates and shop at CRC.

Yah Jules, I usually do just import 10 tyres and keep em around - but obviously they were finished.

I just think its a predatory system, size up your clients wallet when they walk in (its not difficult) and fleece them for what you can.

Then when thet go out of business because they ran out of suckers like her, they bleat here about "tough economic conditions, customers importing themselves etc".

Anyway, she has them now, nothing to do, but it just irks my goat when this happens.

.........and I personally dont even think they are that great either.

Haha - don't buy them then!

Well' date=' thats just a dumb answer Intern, I expected better of you.

What must she do??, paint the treads with silicone?

No man porky I was responding to Eldron (and yes indicating how to coat 'em with silicon).

No doubt the wife had your credit card, ay? Tongue

They can yell "technology"' date=' "smaller market", "niche application" as much as they want but 250g of material versus 10,000g will just never justify bicycle tyre prices to me...

Haha - don't buy them then! When I was a kid we used to retread our Cheng Shin tyres with shoepatch, give that a go!

[/quote']

What? How spoilt were you? We used to tear skin off our arms and stick it to the tyres with used bubblegum we scraped off resaurant tables....

YOU'RE LUCKY.....(and so it starts..erm...again)

Porky, you wouldn't have landed yourself in this awful mess if you'd just been attentive to your wife's cycling needs in the first place... Now you're blaming it on 'predatory' bike shops. tsk, tsk. Lesson learned no doubt.

Used Gators forever, last time I went to replace was in the middle of the credit crunch, was put off by the price and bought Vredestein Ricorso instead at R200 a pop. Most happy

................were looking a bit worn on the weekends ride and been a woman and impatient took herself off this morning to get two new ones.

Calling me from the car' date=' she said she had bought two new "Gatorskins" cos the guy in the shop said they were ideal for her - sounds fine I said, how much were they by the way........................??

R800.00 bucks for two, she said.!!!!!!!!!!!

"WHAT".................................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I dont know prices, I seldom walk into cycle shops, but is this average?

Personally I cant think so I have this sneaky feeling she was "skinned".

But before I kick up a stink about predatory shops taking advantage of unknowing consumers,(and I will if need be), I need to ask...................................What is average price,?? - just ball park, give or take, approximate, plus / minus - I want to know, "all welcome to answer".

I purchased 2 in March from Cajees @ R 740, and 2 from Westdene in April for R 640

At least she did not buy crap, but it was at a slight premium.

I suspect that something has changed in the compound of the Gatorskin tyres, and it aint good. I have always used Gatorskins without hassle, but recently I started experiencing a crazy amount of punctures on my road bike. On inspection, I noticed that the side walls were kinda rotting with all threads coming outta them - and they were not even that old or that worn. Anyway, i changed the tyres (this time to Bontrager), and have not had a puncture on my road bike since.

BUT last week, i had 2 punctures on my hybrid, which have .......(yeah u guessed it....Gatorskins, and also they aiont really that worn cos I use this bike mainly on the idt.

I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this syndrome.

Anyway, Porky, you will be proud of me cos I have exercised my consumer rights and bitched like to the LBS, who promised to take this up with Coninental. Thus far though they have done f..... all about it.

Lastly. Sending the wife to buy tyres (whether for car or bike) is kinda like sending me to buy tampons. Its no wonder she got ripped off!
