A cheque payment will reflect almost immediately subject to a clearing period of about a week. So only after a week consider the money properly in your account.

Seems like some people will do anything money!

Not quite, it will reflect and be included in the balance not the available balance, only after a 7 - 14 days will it reflect as available.

Why not simply make the For Sale section viewable only to registered members? It's not going to get rid off the scheissters already here, but it should eliminate unregistered ones.

This tactic has become almost standard on autotrader/junkmail etc:

Deposit a fraudulent cheque into your account, the amount shows within a day or two, they collect the goods, the bank finds the fraudulent cheque a few days later and reverses the transaction leaving you with no goods and no money!

It takes the bank about 10 working days to clear a cheque and they will happily reverse the amount if the cheque is fraudulant.

Always wait until the cheque clears before handing over the goods.

Be suspiscious if the buyer pressures you unecessarily to collect the goods.

Don't forget - the buyer hasn't actually "given you the money" until the cheque clears so he has no right to expect the goods before the cheque clears...

It still won't stop them though. They could simply register with bogus credentials and carry on ripping people off. What may be safer is to introduce a confidence rating based on some criteria such as Hub status or CSA Licence no, or suchlike, and then the seller will either take his chance trying to sell on The Hub with a low rating, or be forced to sell it on another website like Gumtree. The purchaser will have a measure of confidence in dealing with the seller. It's not perfect, but reduces the occurence of this happening. I realise this may make transactions a bit more long-winded, but in this day and age it's better to be safer than lose your dosh.

Why not have a verification system similar to the one on bidorbuy? Each person gets "verified" by having R1 charged against a credit card. In order to do the credit card transaction, the hubber would have to supply a lot of personal details which can be verified against his banking details. Verification is optional, but then again, so is doing business with an unverified hubber.

It is easy to turn a check into rubber, not so easy with a credit card.

I've had quite a few dodgy calls for the frame I'm selling. They all operate the  same way, and will want to deposit the cash before even seeing the item.

As soon as that happens alarm bells should start ringing. The one guy phoned and asked how I would like to be paid. I said to him cash, he said no its dangerous to drive with all that cash from the west rand, and he'll deposit a cheque. I said thats cool there's plenty of banks walking distance from where i work, I'll walk there with him if he's afraid. He said eish, he'll get back to me....

ONLY deal in EFT or CASH CASH...

How would you know its an EFT and not a rubber cheque.

Maybe proof of payment. Cheques need to deposited over the counter and you will be able to see.
