I've been using Shimano 215 shoes for about 3 years now, and I need to get me a new pair of shoes. I am keen on trying the specialized range (Pro Road), but am afraid that the body geometry features will bugger up everything. Does anybody have experience with Specialized Pro road shoes after using shimanos? Does BG shoes really work? I currently do not have any knee problems etc.

I went from shimano shoes and other non BG shoes to the Spez. The shoes will alter the alignment of your ankle and knee and could cause you some problems. I personaly love the BG stuff and will never buy another brand, they just work realy well for me.

The forefoot varus tilt built into BG shoes (1.5mm) is approriate for most of the population out there. It will not detract from anything even if you have no knee issues but it will assist in limiting excess knee articulation and permit better power delivery to the pedals.

Ive used Shame-ano's before i got the deal of the century from 1X and never looked back! Pity those shoes of timhoek didnt fit you.

You seriously wont regret going the BG shoes route.

Ive found the 'transition' to be good from the Shimanos to the Spez. No problemo, feet felt comfortable from the first ride!

Have had BG road and mtb shoes for years, no real problems other than the buckle strap which broke off where it goes into the tongue on one road shoe in the first year, Specz replaced both shoes for free.

Also, Shimano shoes are neutral while the Specz shoes as you say are not. This creates a problem for me as I have had to add 2 x 1.5mm valgus shims to counteract the varus built in tilt.

Very few people (like, VERY few) have a valgus forefoot. FYI you shouldn't use more than 1 valgus shim per shoe. If 2 are needed, Specialized suggest rather using a neutral shoe.

I bought a pair of S-works road shoes recently and after my first hard ride I felt ?discomfort in my left knee (front) and pain in my left hip. the knee pain probably was as a result of the seat on my borrowed bike being too low but am at a loss as to explaining the hip pain. The pain though disappeared after my next ride so I am guessing it was just a matter of me adjusting to the new shoe- pedal combo. I love the arch support in the shoe which helps with the alignment of the leg.

The sole is also super stiff which comes in handy as I do not want to waste the little power that I do haveCry

Yep apparently so, but then I am kinda special...Big%20smile

Problem is I only found that out a few years after I bought the shoes, pity they do not (well at the time i bought them which was +/- 2005) warn you that the shoes (BG) are not neutral.

Local specz dealer told me I can use 2 but not more than that...

When I went shopping for new road shoes a year ago, the specialised road shoes I now have basically sold themselves. When I tried them on, the fit was quite amazing, the comfort perfect, and having raced hard with them I must say that the BG stuff really works. Just superb.

As soon as my shimano mtb shoes fall apart (3 years now and they look rather crap) I will  also get Specialised mtb BG shoes, no question about it.

saving up at the moment....

Yeah, but what I do not understand is that why do you need the cant in cycling shoes to improve alignment, but not in your normal walking shoes. Is a neutral shoe not actully closer to natural than the BG stuff?

Posted

Because when you walk, your feet are beneath your knees and it beneath your hips. On the bike, because the pedals are closer together then your natural stance, your knees and hips are flexed (if that is the correct term) inward. If you can get your pedals wider apart then you should not need shims and wedges and stuff. But because manufacturers want to make bikes as aero as possible, they move the pedals closer together.

Can one use BG insoles in SIDI shoes ? To get the slope right and the advantages from the BG range ?

I have done that and they work perfectly smiley32.gif

Is it the insoles that give the valgus / angle to align the knee or should one use the insole to get the arch support and then also the shims to get the tilt ?
