Picked up my copy of Bicycling yesterday.

On reading the review of the bibs what struck me was the good value for money (or so it seems) of the Vermarc range and I'm sure the Assos F1.Uno were priced at R 1 155.

One day I will rich enough to buy a pair but for now, my butt likes my R300 Le Tour. I have First Ascents on order thou. They are expensive at R390. *he he*

To tell the truth, I tried a Arione saddle for 2x 80km with a pair of shorts with almost no padding (on purpose), and it was very comfortable. So I think the saddle and proberbly butt design also playes a part.

Yeah, they do to a certain degree but when you're on the saddle for bizarre amounts of time then the shorts make a huge difference as well.

i've never tried Assos, but always wondered how good they REALLY are?

I however have Nalini,Santini and a Pearl Izumi ! ..all at more than half the Assos price , and they work great for me.. even on my 135gr SLR !

Yeah, I have Nalini and Santini as well, alas for it doesn't come close. Apparently the top end of the Pearl Izumi's is the next best below the Assos, can't speak from experience though. Like I said, I will reserve judgement on the Vermarc until such a time as I have some to try on a proper ride, not one of these pissy little 4-5 hour rides, until then, the Assos is king.

The distributors of Santini were invited to send a couple of their bibs for the review but apparently didn't meet the deadlines.

....and if you got a bad one you're screwed no matter what you buy?

But if you get a good one, espesially infront of you on a ride, it's heaven.

i cannot bring myself to spend this much on bibs... i've been happy enough and comfy enough on all my multi-day trips (and my longer day rides in between) with my Fizik saddle (had the CP Pave which i loved, and now have the arione which i love even more) and my el-cheapo Le Tours and not-so-cheap cape storms

I agree with you on this SP, the difference was really driven home when I started doing 24 hour races. After the first 2 my ass was ripped open and bleeding, not cool, and I changed shorts about 4 times to try and alleviate this. Then I got the Assos, I refused to remove them and my ass was sore but certainly nothing like the other encounters, more bruising than chafing.
