I also had this. I went to the hardware shop, bought myself a can off lubricant (the pressure tin). These days after a wash and dry, I spray oil on all the moving parts (with that long red straw). The force of the spray force the lube into all moving parts.

The shop can grease everything when it goes in for a service

the cable that sticks out from your front derailer might be clipping your pedal each time it comes past.

Or it might be your knees?

I used to get that with a cleaned chain that was not properly lubed. You would swear that the clicks come from the BB or pedals, as you feel the click through the pedal. On second thought, check for a bent chain link as well.

Firstly it can't be the pedals as I swapped it out with the ones on my Tandem and used different shoes and still get the sound. It is there even when I stand so that would exclude the seatpost. I also checked the clearance between crank and front derailer that is fine.

Got a new chain on so that is fine. Might be the head set. But I think this all point to the BB as when I'm spinning the sound is mostly gone. It is when you put a bit more power on like when climbing where the sound increases. It is as if I feel it on the pedal.

i had a similar problem.

i have a 105 crankset with the 2 locking bolts on the left crank arm.

the clicking noise came from the bolts.

might be similar to your problem.

take them out , put a bit of grease on and try it then.

i replaced the small washers with brass washers

This morning I inspected my bike and tries to switch my pedals - duh!!! OK, so I put them back on and no more clicking this morning. I did notice that the suspect has a bit of play on it.

Its an elchepo that came with the Giant and has now done 750km a fall or 2. Suspect it is that. Also suspected the headset as I had to dissemble my bike to get it into the car when we came back from holiday.

After going through everything that the other posts have suggested, you may want to consider the following if your click has not been exorcised:

Does the click happen whether you're sitting or standing?

If it only happens when you are sitting, this could more than likely be a saddle/seatpost/seatpost-clamp or even seatpost/frame interface problem. All resolved by cleaning each part properly and applying some grease. Careful if your frame is carbon, you should rather use a carbon specific paste for the seatpost in the frame then. Grease causes the post to slip quite easily, whereas carbon paste has a very fine grit for extra grip.

If the click happens both sitting or standing, it could be that your chainrings are a little dusty where they meet the crank spider. Remove, clean the spider and chainring tabs, apply a thin film of lube and reassemble and tighten.

Finally, it could be your pedal bearings. Service or replace, whichever is needed. Make sure that the pedal threads and the shoulder of the pedal thread that tightens against the crank are well greased and tightened appropriately.

Good luck. I have had a click that was a water bottle cage rivnut without a cage installed. The small amount of flex in the frame when pedalling was just enough to cause the rivnut to move and click each time. Tightening the screw in the rivnut fixed that.

The click is gone today and I cannot find the click-spot. I've identified the cause though and shanejvv your spot on ... my little bitch is a dirty whore who needs a good loving and cleaning this weekend.

Embarrassed to say I have not washed her panties in 4 months, and consider I ride her everyday, so her clean-up is way overdue!!!

Good to hear.

Silence = Sanity (for a bike ride anyway)

Identified the click, it was my peddle. There is a little rubber cap covering a nut and it was not seated correctly. The cap actually knocked against the nut ... poor maintenance on my side was the cause.

Good reason to upgrade my pedals but still need to give the dirty girl a really good wash this weekend. LOL

EDIT: I did also check the headset and no problem there. Did feel a bit of a bumpeness when I do really sharp turns (zig-zag) at low speed ... was really concerned as I expected it to be bearings.

This morning I had a brain wave: Could be those nobbelies on the side of the tyre Tongue

Came across this sight tonight: http://www.jimlangley.net/wrench/keepitquiet.html

And found the exact description of what it is - and I also suspected it first:

If you hear a longer metallic click when pushing on the right pedal

only the chainrings may be flexing allowing the chain, for just

a moment to brush against the front derailleur cage making a metallic

clicking sound.

Solution: This rubbing noise is essentially rider error.

If you pedal in a hard gear (on the large front chainring) at a slow

speed, you can easily put too much force on the chainrings causing them

to flex and causing the chain to rub against the derailleur cage. Instead,

you should shift into an easier gear so that you can spin rather than

powering in too high a gear. This is safer for your knees and legs and

is a more efficient and effective way to ride your bicycle that will

prevent the chain rub/noise.*

I noticed that my chainrings run slightly skew. They are correctly spaced and there is no play on them, excuse and correct my ignorance but it seems to be a misaligned bottom bracket?

This causes my chain-line not to be 100%, but the small amount of variation seems not have any effect, only if my front derailleur is not correctly set and chain rubs against it.

Checking at LBS, rear pivot bots loose (ish) crank arm a little loose and bolts. Rode on Saturday only left hand side now "clicking" will have to find something else to tighten!
