Hi all,

I bought my first full susser, a GT Marathon 1.0, thinking that the back shock could be locked like the front one. It is a Fox RP23 with a lever and a dial with three settings.

Flipping the lever does nothing at all. Changing the dial doesn't seem to do much either. The shock just wont lock out. The bike shop said the shock doesn't lock out completely and isn't supposed to.

A friend of mine has a GT Force One with the same shock on the back and it doesn't lock either.

Is it supposed to lock? If so, am I missing something obvious? Any input would be appreciated.

no, not suppose to lock. it has what they call pro pedal that can be set stiffer with the dial. If your pressure is correct the you can get the pro pedal pretty stiff ie. no3 on dial. and then full open which is what I do.

if you set it on stiff then yes quite a bit. In propedal you will just see it move now and then on bumps. Open will be fully active all the time. Thats if you are sitting and pedaling.

It doesn't lock, add some extra air, with 5-10mm sag dialed on 3 that would be the hardest you can get. I would put too much air you don't want to pop the shock. its the best shock for me make sure you set it up correct first.

I've got the Fox Float R, and when I set it on a harder setting it does feel a bit stiffer, but also doesn't lock out completely..

Thanks for the input.

Glad to hear it is not supposed to lock but I can't feel or see a difference in stiffness between the settings. I was hoping for a quick fix as the LBS says they send it off to be serviced and that means I would be without my baby for a while Cry

I am pretty heavy, 103 kg, so the shock is pretty pumped up. Could that negate the settings dial?

Dunno if i'm crazy but I've got an RP23 and when you flip the blue lever across it makes a HUGE difference. As close to lock as you can get. I'm only 80kg though. The 1,2,3 damper settings make a slight difference. I had the same problem that you describe and I took it to Morningside cycles. You can give them your shock and they send it away for service. You can either wait for a couple of weeks to get yours back or you can just pay for the service and get a replacement shock as a permanent swop.

I have the RP2 and when you flick it to pro pedal there is a big diff (but not lock out)

what pressure is it pumped to maybe the harder and higher the pressure the less you notice the diff

I think mine is pumped at about 135 I weigh 78kgs

Thanks for the help everyone, from your answers I see there is definitely something wrong with it. I guess I will just have to send it off. Maybe my wife will let me ride her bike... probably not.

The higher pressure gives better lock out... I rode my RP23 at 150 to 165( 1mm of sag ), I weigh 68 kg, fully kitted.

To stop the jack hammer( bounce when getting to the top of a bump with the shock compressed) effect I set my rebound really slow, 2 or 3 clicks from minimum rebound.

The pro-pedal would then be very tight, and effectively lock out. If you set up with more sag the significant compression inside the shock gives the wallow effect.. as the pro-pedal is not as effective as it should be. Yes its more comfortable...
