the ladies want to ride.

allow us!

this is a posting that deserves more thime than i have right now ... i don['t want to make it sound angry ... it's just an observation

reading a posting on the freedom challenge website, written by a female freedom challenger finisher of last last year, made me think ... she mentioned things like a guy saying to her he'll never allow his wife to take part in an event like this ...

i know that lots of guys do a lot for their wives in terms of cycling - guys e.g. looking for bikes for their wives, 'cos they want them to ride with them ... the thing is - not allowing the wife to chooce her own bike, there's something in there about 'i don't believe you can'

... someone's gotta look after the kids or buy groceries or to homey things while the other ones' out there in the early mornings or on saturdays. it can be balanced, i see a lot of guys on the hub that are very  proud of their wives, i have girl friends whos boys and husbands support them and second them on events.

but unfortunately it's not an equal world out there. i also have friends (in the minority, i have to add) who sometimes cancel cycling arrangements with me due to homey things that has to be done :(

thing is: the whole industry supporting the fame and publicity is male dominated. It's only natural they dont pump up the takings for females. Once they female audience demands a female based content in all forms of media, male earnings will always dominate. Besides, the numbers dont lie: physically, women are weaker than men. Higher action (more satisfying viewing) always lies with men.?

k, walkervill results are out.

i wasn't at prize giving (was still riding then) so don't know the actual amounts awarded to the different categories

but here's the numbers of participants, with the advertised prize money

my point being that - yes, i understand the guys are better, and they are faster.

but if there are categories for every age you can think of, then if you look at the times and number of participants for the grand masters (and yes, all those okes beat me) then surely the sub-vet girls deserved prize money at least equal to thsat of the grand masters?? or equal to the senior girls, for that matter - not so?

8 grand masters ? 400, 300, 200 (3:08:24, 3:31:39, 3:57:57)

10 junior men ? 400, 300, 200 (2:42:42, 2:44:31,

2:59:17)

13 senior women ? 400, 300, 200  (2:47:51,

2:59:22, 3:15:24)

33 sub vet & + women ? 300, 200, 100 ( 3:02:32,

3:09:18, 3:10:47)

Nah - I'm gonna stick with my top 10 overall get the most prize money and the remaining cash gets spread evenly between the other age/gender groups.

Which really means I'm tripping myself up - I'm a sub vet man and my category is ALWAYS the best supported.

I don't think it's about numbers, hours of training, dedication or ability - to me prize money is the incentive to make "the best of the best" perform even better. I want to see someone (almost always an elite male) carve up the single track, fly off the drop offs, climb the legs of his competitor and generally smash the course with vigour and anger. The elite males are just more fun to watch and should be incentivised to create more of a spectacle for us.

I watched the Fort William DH Cup last night - the ladies went down the course fast but the elite males jumped further, went through the speed trap faster and smashed the berms and rocky sections at a ridiculous pace - faster than the ladies, juniors, sub vets and vets. They should earn the bulk of the prize money (in my opinion).

I told my wife to by a GT because it's what I ride and I know best right? Well she went out and bought herself a Trek Fuel with all the latest bling and wont let me ride it.

You should spend some time here in Tzaneen. The women farmers rule the roost. They ride when they like and they choose and buy their own bikes. I guess its because they are equal bread winners and that is empowering. Whatever the cause we have a cool social dynamic I am glad to be a part of.

Based on the fact that the times were similar I gotta agree with that. Alas this is a theoretical discussion only or perhaps (hopefully) some race organisers are reading this and giving it some thought - who knows what platforms are the springboards for new ideas?

haha id love to spend some time there - not bacuase the girls choose their own bikes, but because it's a stunning part of the country - i bet all those girls choosing their own bikes would know how to ride them as well - and know where the juiciest bits are :)

Yeah, it is beautiful. Mountain biking heaven. I just leave my farm gate, pick a direction and go...

The girls do know a lot. It's the curse of the internet. I tried to swap out my wife's Bontrager lite wheels with my old ones and that didn't get me very far Angry

I've just learnt some interesting news....so here's a new decision firstly on how to make the woman race harder and secondly how to give them equal prize money.

I've heard that they're earning exhorbitant salaries which I believe they don't even deserve half that amount. I nearly fell off my bike when I heard what some of the ladies are earning. Maybe if you're a top world class cyclist you can earn that but really, it is ridiculous!!

So, why not take away those ridiculous salaries and start making the ladies race for their pay. They can earn a basic minimum and then use that extra money in the prize money of races to make them race for their pay.

They don't need the prize money with the salaries they're getting so why race for it.....what do you think???

If the women are earning exorbitant salaries,  I wonder what the men are earning given the propensity for wage inequalities?

I am not trying to pick a fight Wonder Woman, just asking the question.

I also wonder hey!!

I'm also beginning to wonder if our females might have it better than the men.....??? I somehow have a feeling their salaries are more in line with the overseas lot.

Would be interesting to find out the whole truth here!!!

Just a question - when we're talking about prize money, what are we talking about here?  The odd R500 or so, or much bigger amounts?  Is the price money really a part of a pro cyclist's earnings?
