I had the cheap pick n pay bike, and no cycling shorts. Used to cycle in tackies shorts and a T shirt.

No quick release, no tubby bag and no pump to take along. Punctures meant a long walk homeand at some stage, I used to quite enjoy punctures because then I got to spend the whole afternoon away from home. Timed my walk to get home as it got dark.

My first racing bike was a Western Flyer with cotter pin cranks. Bought it from a mate for R200 in 1990.

It wasn't even my bike ... loaned it from my father in law, had those real fancy brakes you could pull either in the drops or on the top!

For my first 94.7 I also had one like that BigBen. And the gears that change on the downtube.

Looks like I paid a lot for my first bike....R800 for my chrome Bridgestone. Still the most comfortable bike I ever had, albei extremely heavy!!

While my bike is OK, have in 4 months got 2 pairs of chairity shorts, cycle with some old tekkies and toe clips. Got some Woolies gloves that I used on my motorbike and my municipal raincoat :)

Slowly getting my gear together. This is a good month, just got my LG gloves on Saturday, my WASP TF kit should arrive end of month, getting shoes and 520-pedals month end Thumbs%20Up

1987 was the year. Superspeed Ultralight from PnP Hypermarket...R499.99. Let me assure you it was neither speedy nor light.

Spent ALL my pocket money "customizing" it...lumo green bar tape, lumo green seat cover, lumo green saddle bag, lumo green toeclip straps. My mate and I bought matching everything from matching Topsport helmets to socks.  Good times of note.

Those cotter pins used to cause major crap when they came out while you were pedalling Ouch

Remember those brakes well, had to have e'm, or you weren't cool....

Those Patricks - first they were blue with some red in, then came the really fancy one's which were black with some yellow.

The colours of the bikes were freakish - I rode one of those locally manufactured Cosmos bikes in the most scicadellic colours possible.

Had a Blue Peugeot with at first yellow handle bar tape and and yellow saddle cover, later got some shocking yellow/green tape.

Not sure qhy I needed the seat cover, I suppose it was purely cosmetic.

I started riding when I was a student, so money went towards drinking and partying rather than books and bikes, but the shorts had such bad chamois, that I needed one of those saddle covers full of gel!! It probably weighed a fifth of the bike, and was uber uncomfortable to stay on top of.

Also remember those funny looking cycling caps - I see some riders wearing them these days under their helmets, and that black strips of foam we wore as head protectors.

Look pedals and dont forget the cateye!!

Dude, you have it all wrong. You can only use one set of pedals at a time. No wonder you had to wait to get all your other stuff. Spent too much on pedals.LOLWink
