It seems to be a common combination to run Conti Mountain King with a Race King. My question is which do you run on the back and which do you run on the front? I would think the Mountain King on the front for good grip in the corners and the Race King on the back for lower rolling resistance. I have however seen some guys running them in the reverse. Anyone got any views on this one.

Mountain King front, Race King on the back. I rode with this combination on Sunday for the first time and LOVE it!

Yeah I want to try that as well' date=' but apparently the conti's don't play well with stans???[/quote']

I am running the combination at the moment, its working well. Very grippy in the corners. I have had no problem with Stan's and the Conti's. I did however have a Larsen replaced due to Stans, tyre bubbled up. Maxxis replaced it for me.

Awesome combo and no problems with Stans. You could run the mountain king backwards for additional grip but rather look at running a wider tyre up front, got a 2.4 on my one wheelset and it rocks.

Also look at a racing ralph (rear) and rocket ron (front) combo from Schwalbe.

I also use Mtn King front, Race King rear, with Stans. Works perfectly and is a fantastic tire combo. In fact I rode the whole Epic like this without a single puncture.

Popular Combos: (Front First)

Conti Mountain King / Race King

Maxxis Ignitor / Crossmark

Schwalbe Nobby Nic / Racing Ralph

Kenda Nevegal / Small Block Eight

Idea is grip front and speed at the back.

The other great combination is Schwalbe Nobby Nic on the front, Racing Ralph on the back. But as Rude pointed out, this is more expensive and the UST versions are harder to get in SA than Conti.

Drop Shamus a line.

I've order a couple of  Schwalbe tyres with red and white stripes in them.

Eish ja the ralphs are expensive !

Im riding bonty jones xr team front and rear at the mo, and they are 485g for a tubeless ready tyre, but they sit so tight you can't get em off, even with tyre levers! So I need to get new tyres where I can get a tube in if needed trailside...

Anyone have weight and pricing on the mountain/race combo(in the lightest black chilli model)? How do they wear?

Not well with a low cut blouse but great with my calf skin boots.

Try CRC... if you get them included in an order with free shipping they work out pretty cheap.
