MTB Highjacking..Alberton area

Wendell

AngryHi Guys, this is serious. We have had 5 highjackings from 10th till yesterday.Friday the 10th Mike had his new bike taken after beating him up..2 guys...then last Friday a near miss, Craig....Mannie..a confrontation and near miss, Saturday up the steps Eddie was hit with a club ..but got away and yesterday Marco and friend had their bikes taken. These thugs 4 of them, operate in the area from Mayberry park to the papermills.... always near the bridges and on sand roads. They are armed with pangas and heavy knobkierries. Please don't ride in small groups. I suggest meeting at the farm and leave in groups. For those who normally ride alone and aren't part of a group I will organise a breakfast ride at7.30am Sat. and Sun. with a later start at 9am....contact me to confirm so we can get numbers together. The farm is still the safest ride in the South. Don't be heros and take them on on your own..you have family members who care.Angry

Where exactly were the incidents Wendall, you mention the steps but surely not all of the incidents were there.?

I cant say I ride in the area much, but I do run there on the odd morning and as I am usually alone (although not much to steal) its quite concerning.

On the other hand I can say I have run there for years on and off and never had any incidents, I expect the incidents were off the road?

Porky, near the old railway lines and further down towards the Klipriver bridge near Nampack. There is also a brocken down house near Rand water, we have found crude chairs for two. We have heard tonight that the detectives are actually interested and have contacted Marco. We hope they will nail these suckers.

I am new to this MTB thing, but on all my training rides that I have done alone, I carry my Glock 27. Yea a bit stupid some would say, but then I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!! My 2c.....

Really good info from Wendell, specifics on everything, should be v useful to people riding on the sand roads down there.

But this sort of thing (quoted below) is really, really useless. Plenty of very decent folk do the same thing. A group of cyclists catches people's attn. The interpretation says more about the observer than the observed imo.

Passed two guys sitting against their white golf near the bridge at nampak on Sunday morning showing a lot of interest in the passing bikes - pointing to the frames and nodding to each other !! Riding in a bunch in that area is a must.

I dont believe that this will be limited to MTB's only.

It has been very quiet for a long time in the area , and now this crap again.

I know its self defense...but using that gun is going to land you in more trouble than anything else.

I have started riding on the trails at the farm, and even though its the same trails, I'd rather ride knowing its a lot safer.

Thanks Wendell...

I know at Sportsmans Warehouse they sell that pepper spray for cyclists, but I think I'd feel much better riding with something a bit more solid

Dont be fooled, pepper spray is pretty effective!

You also get those fairly small painball markers with the pepper balls. I dont think they would be able to do much against one of those.

but as soon as they drop the weapon or turn their back on you your life is not in danger anymore and you can't shoot them.
