its a Portacatena

 

a fancy version of that braised on chain stud that some frames (many ) have to hook the chain up on when you take the wheel out

 

you fitted it and you had somewhere to shift your chain to when you punctured to take the wheel off and put it back on without the chain being in the way .......

 

it was a pro rider thing  - it never took off basically cause its bella mad - you could change a punctured wheel faster but i think you have to loose a sprocket  so you are on a 5 speed instead of a 6 ?

 

it came with a special shifter and there where campy special dropouts that came drilled to fit it

 

it was mental and never took off and so its a rare but pointless bit of kit

 

you should make a necklace out of it

Need to show you an example of the what the drawers looked like before and after they were cleaned. Years of grease removed without removing the patina

Chain holder, screws onto Campag rear dropout, holds the chain in place when changing a wheel.

I have never before seen anything like that portacatena, definitely a cool piece of kit for a special bike  - nice one Bikebloka & Markob - like I have said before, the people on this thread never cease to amaze me with their knowledge and how freely they share it
