Anyway, if you decipher it, it says Tony Impey on the top.

So I contacted Tony and this is what he replied:

Hi Vic,

That was my bike sold it to a guy in the Cape in the eighties.

My Club Johannesburg Cycling Racing Team which was Sponsored by TI Raleigh at the time donated a Raleigh 753  to me.

For being the Club Omnium Champion .

Won 3 SA individual Pursuit Titles on it.

“    SA  20km and record holder 1976 on it.

“    SA  Games  40km Gold Medal on it.

“    SA  Games  4000m IND Pursuit Title on it

Great Memories.

Please send a pic.

Regards

Tony

So now the bike has some real history and thanks to Tony for replying, so real SA history in my hands.

Great story and and and an absolute class act of a bike!

Speaking of Tony Impey I bought a Peugeot frame from Allan van Heerden road cycles in the 80s. Was “served” by Willie Engelbrecht as it he was working at Allan’s shop at the time.

Saved long and hard for the frame and I really enjoyed the buying experience. Was quite star struck as a youngster, by all the pro’s around the shop… The Peugoet was only 531c tubing but an absolute gorgeous frame with the seat post not having a seat post lug or bolt. It tightened on the same principle as a stem does. Anyway I was told that the frame was actually imported for Tony Impey.

Also heard a brilliant story of a magazine stuck in a seat tube where Tony may or may not have been involved...don't know if there was ever any truth to that one, but we'll leave it for another day :-)

I was and am a pretty average cyclist! Never really got into competitive cycling until I got a stress fracture from running, sometime around 1981. Then I bought a 'real' bike and started riding and loved it. I rode with lots of the 'hot boys' and almost always brought up the rear, but I did enjoy it and it helped with running and triathlons.

Anyway, to cut a long and boring story short, I bought this Alan frame (1984) in about 86, intending to sort it and attempt to ride track. I never sorted it, it's been in my spare room, garage, container for 30 years!!!!

But, here she is, Maillard hubs on Rigida tubby rims; kalloy stem and no name bars. Campag seat post and Sugino cranks.

Probably still won't ride her, no tracks anywhere near here!!!!

Aha! The Alan is still one of my favorite track bikes and I have two built up which I ride occasionally. Still one of the most comfortable frames on the bumpy HNP circuit.

Frame repairer in Gauteng?

So the #tourofara claims another victim - my Petini's frame is cracked at the rear drop-outs. Also the rear axle snapped. Must have been a big bump somewhere along the 820km of Karoo dirt roads! Now hoping to find a person who can braze a new drop-out in place - suggestions welcome!
