Rest in Peace, my favourite bike of them all.

Destroyed by an inattentive motorist yesterday.

1991 DuToit in 653.

Bike was complete except for its new paint job, which was scheduled for January.

I had also just finished making leather bar tape, which I had installed.

Loved this bike. Going to miss her.

Here she is before the accident, and before I installed the leather.

Dammit! Really sorry to read that. I hope you came off better than your bike.

I did.

Amazing things, steel bikes.

I'm ****** up, the bike has a crumpled seat-stay and top tube, and she still got me the 15km home.

Smooth as silk.

Almost as if she knew she had to do this one last thing.

i really do think that these old bikes have a soul of sorts.

Oh well. A new journey will begin now.

Oh sadness, Chro Mo. Glad you're OK ... but I know I'd be destroyed if my old Le Turbo left this life. They could take my other bikes, but not her.

Maybe try Francois at Du Toit Cycles here in CT and see if he could repair it?

He does not reply to emails etc at the best of times, and i don't think he undertakes repairs anymore.

we corresponded a bit over the bikes origins, but he has since gone OTG.

Maybe the relaunch of the LeJeune brand has altered his focus.

I'll hang onto her for a while yet, so no rush.

The bikes been around for 20+ years, no harm in a while longer.

LeJeune relaunched? Really? Who can tell me more?

Francois has gone the Chinese import route and isn't making frames anymore. Duncan no longer works for him and is working for Marks Bicycle Workshop in Belville. If you want a really interesting chat go speak to Duncan, he knows everything there is to know about the frame building business in SA and is a true legend of the industry. And no, he's not remotely interested in building/repairing frames, that ship has sailed.

Sad news ChroMo. If you're interested, I have FdT LeJeune, about 60cm, that I'm happy to swop or sell. Maybe a bit too big, though your dt looked about 58cm.

Just found a Colnago Mexico (Sarroni I think, though it's been resprayed and difficult to tell), but she's a beaut.

Cheers for the offer, but I am building a 29er at the moment, and between that and my CX bike, I'm covered for now.

I will look at my options in the New Year.

I think my next classic would have to be Italian, and a beauty.

We'll see.
