Why is it that guys in road races think its ok to chuck used GEL , ENERGY BAR WRAPPERS & PLASTIC BOTTLES onto the side of a the road.

At the Dome to Dome yesterday I was shocked to see guys throwing their used rubbish on the side of the road. It?s just a easy to put back in your pocket once you have used it as it is to take it out???TRUST ME carrying your rubbish to the finish is not going to slow you down.

My racing calendar is made up of mostly mountain bike races & 99% of the guys racing these mountain bike races have respect for the areas they ride. Why should it be different in road races???

I train on the roads out in the cradle area 3-4 times a week & now I have to head out on my morning rides & see all your crap on the sides of the roads.

Guys it?s not very hard to put your used rubbish in your pockets & throw it in the bin when you get to the finish.

Oh yes!  I tend to take guys to task over this though I know it makes my name mud.  I was aware of guys tossing their used wrappers into the bushes but nobody that close to me that I felt the urge to kick up a stink.

To the guys that toss their wrappers, WHO WILL PICK THESE UP??!!  I have had some geniuses respond that "That is what my race fee is for."  Well guess what Einstein, if you think that your R160 odd fee covers a team travelling the ENTIRE length of the race and cleaning up hundreds or thousands of empty gel sachets, THINK AGAIN.  It doesn't happen and those sachets are not biodegradeable.  Furthermore, the residents of the area have already had to deal with the major inconvenience of having a race along their roads and now you add insult to injury by leaving your mess behind to remind them.  WAKE UP!

Oh and it just shows a total lack of class and consideration.  I just wish I knew what goes through people's minds as they toss their wrapper into the bushes.

I have to agree. Their are some real pigs out there. i also noticed how many empty sachets there were along the road.

After discovering RideShots from power Bar I no longer have sticky gel sachets in my back pockets or gel all my hands. Mabe cyclists should change over to them and then there will be less empty sachets/packets along the road.

Yep, I am in full support and agreement.

Yesterday, at around Tarlton, some d@@s took his goo wrapper and threw it on the roadside. I proceed to tell him that was not nice.

His response, that is why they have marshalls, to oick up the rubish afer we fininsh riding.

Too bad tha savage has three buddies he was with otherwise I might have been tempted to hit him off his bike.

I was appalled at the number of goo wrapper I saw all over the roads.

I am a roadie and I am ahsmed to admit it, lest I get painted with the same brush.

It costs nothing to carry your wrapper along with you to the end and throw it away later.

Really, the atitudes suck. BIG time.

Blame Tour de France - everybody thinks they are Lance, everybody thinks they can ride without helmets, everybody thinks they can toss their bottles like the pros.

Agree with statement that mountain bikers litter just as much. Its a case of numbers. Only 1000 people at mtb race, 5k plus guys in road race. 5 times more litter to observe.

We should get less obsessed about how good we think we are, and become realists that understand bragging rights only counts in our little inner circle!!

Bragging rights nothing. Poeple should know and understand that goo wrappers are not environementally friendly.

It is my sonsidered opinion that race marshalls are not employed (do not volunteer) to run aound being a scivvy. They are there for the safety of us cyclists and we need to adjust our atitudes and appreciate why they are there.

For anyone too "sleg" to carry their own wrappers to the fininsh, employ a scivvy to ride behind you and pick up your trash.

This is exactly why SA looks like a pigpen.

Too many people who could give a rats.....

It?s not a contest to say that Mountain bikers are better than Roadies, Tri Athletes or anyone else who rides a bike.

I spend more time training on my Road bike than I do racing on my mountain bike!!! So not sure what that makes me BUT I have raced nearly ever mountain bike race in the country at the front of the race & at the back & I have never seen so many people litter as I did yesterday.

Whether it is on the road or mountain bike guys should keep their rubbish till the end of the race.

Yesterday in the race I took all my gel wrappers with me after using them. I didn't notice too much litter but then I was probably too focussed on cycling to notice.

If you do have the sudden urge to throw your gel wrappers and junk away then you should do so at the waterpoints with all the cups etc.

I personally think we should call a representative of the offending Goo company out to answer on The Hub... It's been done before... So... Powerbar, USN, Hammer... I'll leave Whasp out, they got hammerd here not so long ago... Big%20smilePantani2009-09-14 08:25:24

I agree with the sentiments (there was a thread earlier in the year where J B took a rep to task for throwing his)

Not wanting to make excuses for the t0ssers that have no respect for anyone, but how about the idea that they had at the Argus - where there was a competition if you disposed of rubbish in bins at the finish point - they took your race number down and there was a prize for the number drawn (I take mine away anyway, but there sure was a lot of people entering the competition - more than would usually take their wrappers home!)

Perhaps we should do what they do in the IM. Once you collect a bottle or any other piece of paper or anything you have to discard it 500m before or after the water point. I stopped in my first IM 3 years ago to just say hi to the wife when a fellow competitor handed his wife his jacket. He got a warning for this and was told to report to the penalty tent. No outside help allowed and the rules are enforced. BUT I do also understand that you have 1500 IM and 1500 volunteers in the IM and thus it is easy to control. What about we set up a forum where we can take a culprits number and then look it up afterward and then report him in such a fashion. Not sure if this would work but perhaps a start. a SHAME list of sorts. Just a thought.
