My point is cycling and safety. Have you seen the motorist response to cyclist recently?  If you did' date=' you would not ask the question. We are blamed for everything on the road, and one incident like Sunday's, riding on a NATIONAL ROAD without a helmet, in peak season ..... That is my point [/quote']

cycling on the N2 at this time of the year is asking for PHOO !!! sommer BIG PHOO !!! let alone wiffout a hemut !!!!

I agree with you being so upset.

These people are also meant to be our role models and if they are not using protection then what kind of example are they setting.

I cycled past a guy the other day that never had a helmet on. He was just trying to look like the man with his peak cap on.

I gave him a mouthfull and he then said that he would go and buy a helmet that day.

What the freak is up with that anyway?

I even see some idiots at races with there peak caps on until the last minute before they start racing. And then as soon as the race is finished the helmet is off and the peakie is back on.

It really makes me angry.

I saw a pedastrian that had just got knocked down the other day.

His body was still in the road not covered up nothing. He died because his head took the impact on the windscreen.

And you know what. The point of impact is the same as cycling.

You are at the same height and 7 times out of 10 you are going to hit your head if you go down like that.

Thank you for your advice. I posted this because I am currently working on Cycling Safety. My husband was killed the 16 August this year while cycling. (Beeld 18 August 2009/12 November 2009). I want to make cyclist aware of all the possible dangers as well as to educate motorists' date=' due to the fact that cycling is a very fast growing sport and cyclist are increasing on the roads. Don't want any more deaths.

Thanx again for your reply.

We belong to a community, I believe. A community of cylists.

Setting an example is important. It is our responsibility to our community.

Of course, as an individual, you choose whether to use a helmet or not. Think wider than the individual. Think community.

Every time I do yield, not stop, with my racer at the 4 way stops in my neighbourhood, I know I am representing my cycling community in a way that's not cool / irresponsible.

It is so sorry to hear about deaths on the road. Motorists, pedestrians, roadies. Full stop.

You are going to upset a lot of people with generalising like this.

Not everyone has little concern for safety.

THEN WHY do 95% of cyclists carry on the way they do???

Posted

I can recall passing 100 cyclists, but almost all of them had helmets on and obeyed the rules of the road. So i completely disagree that 95% carry on that way.

Whilst i agree that there are a few bad apples out there, i hardly think its fair to accuse all cyclists of not thinking past their noses.

Just take a look at the amount of helmets that are being traded in the sale section of the hub and it is evident that most of us take safety very seriously.

I sort of agree with TNT's post...those few that are irresponsible and refuse to obey the common logic of safety gear will ultimately bear the price for the lack of judgement at some point.

The old saying of bringing a horse to water rings true here.

The area around Randfontein are littered with cyclist without helmets. Don't worry guys, they will only bump their heads once. smiley21.gif

Just make sure you are wearing yours and the friends with you theirs.Schwynn2009-12-22 11:41:56

As someone said previously....... nobody likes a snitch!!!!!! ....... maybe it is because they feel guilty??????....... at behaving badly??????

I was hospitalised with a serious brain injury after a crash where I iwasn't wearing a helmet .......... a car crash!!

There is a much greater risk of suffering a head injury in a fall from a horse than from a bicycle. I digress I do wear a helmet, but not all the time.

Believe me, as a former superbike racer, Arran Brown does understand the risks, but like me, he's also old enough to make his own decisions .... but was he breaking the law?

?

YES he was breaking the law. Why do we all wear our helmets at a race but once finish or out socially we do not?

He was sending the wrong message, it is okay to ride without a helmet.
