i wanna be able to tell between the colours red and blue - so I wear a helmet.  I try not to let errant/malicious drivers get to me.  If they drive into/over me perhaps the helmet will save at least my head.

saw him on tv last night. had no idea of his sporting background.  pretty impressive no?  but pro's do have more eyes on them. so anything they do can be spun either way.  in my wroking enviro there are always media cameras so every action and word has to be considered.  Like the nanny state comment.

.... but was he breaking the law?

The only mention I can find about helmets in the Road Traffic Act concerns motorbikes, so I don't think he was breaking the law.

Because bicycles are new to the Road Traffic Act, their are some changes to the Act in process.

Road Traffic Act Regulation 207 (2) states: " No person shall ride or be a passenger on a pedal cycle on a public road unless he or she is wearing a protective helmet which fits him or her properly and of which the chinstrap is properly fastened under the chin"

Hmmm, it seems Acts.co.za may be out out date then.

Could you point me to a link where I can find an up-to-date version of the National Road Traffic Act. On the info.gov.za site, the only mention of this regulation that I can find is as an offence listed in the AARTO Act regulations (is that in force yet?). I can't find it in the Road Traffic Act regulations itself.

They say ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it, but damn they make it hard to actually know what the law is Ouch

Sorry for your loss and I am behind your cause 100%, but just my 2c, although it is law that cyclists must wear helmets, there is no enforcement, the police force has a hard enough time trying to keep motorists in line let alone cyclists. I know Arron personally and while I'm not condoning his choice to ride without a helmet it is exactly that, his choice.

personally I know that a helmet can save my pip, I went thru 4 in 1 year, so I will NEVER leave the house without it.

Hi There<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Just spoke to Arran, he told me about the rumor that he is training in and around the Mosselbay area without wearing his helmet!!

Well Arran is in Cape Town at the moment, and I am pretty sure that?s a very long ride from CPT to Mosselbay.

I am in the George area and have been training on the R102 road every day, for the last two weeks, and remember seeing three riders, two riders from Chris Willems?s team and another local Mosselbay rider cruising up Grootbrak wearing no helmets just cycling caps.

So next time please make sure it?s who it is before you make any assumptions and remarks regarding full time pro riders and dragging their names trough the mud!

We normally train in and around Johannesburg and know very well the danger of riding, let alone without a helmet!

Think you owe him an apology!

Kind Regards

Well put Hanco. I do not think Mr Lange would take this lightly.

I would just like to mention the following on this forum. My husband was killed 18  weeks ago. Yesterday' date=' 20 December  2009, We saw Mr Aron Brown, in his Official Medscheme Cycling gear on the N2 (Grootbrak River) WITHOUT HIS HELMET. He was riding with a lady cyclist. What message does that send out Medscheme? I nearly had a heart attack. Still feel that something must be done!!!!

Who's the chop? If you want to stir the pot, take photo's first... and have some respect for the pros up in Joburg who have to share the roads with speeding trucks and aggressive motorists. Safety in key to all the top riders, not too long ago a Rabie from Neotel had a close call while training, luckily he was wearing his helmet.
