Whether or not he will get another pro team ride is another story...[/quote

Why not? its his first offence' date= he's young, plenty of other pros have been caught and have got other rides... also he is VERY fast and will almost certainly whoever employs him many wins.

Astana - i've also heard that SA is one of the easiest countries in the world to get dope.

One of the reasons why so many overseas teams "train" here. And not just cycling' date=' but swimming, running, tennis, the works...[/quote]

Yep, not a hear say thing - I can tell you this with certainty. Just pop into Coetzenburg, Stellenbosch over the December holiday and now during January - lot and lots or Athletes training here - personal coaches and team doctors the works.

Sure its the same in Cape town.

Its way easier to "fine tune" the engine over here and head back with a fully serviced engine to compete against the best in the world.

Drug is everywhere and anywhere - not talking party drugs.

I'm sure drugs are also easily available in southern and south america, asia and the rest of africa.

The main reason that atheletes train here are: Southern hemisphere summer, temperate climate, first world facilities, english speaking, same time zone as europe, etc etc..

Hmmm..... interesting view??? you don't think it could also have something to do with weather at this time of year in the cape (as opposed to northern hemisphere)? Exchange rate = cheap destination compared with dry regions of the Med?? good training routes??

And why do Olympic medal winning athletes come to train at a municipal athletics track in Germiston?

Eldrons 3 main reasons why pro riders training in SA:

1) The weather

2) The time is within an hour or two of most european cities

3) A 200-300km drive is much easier for a vampire than a 10,000km flight!

As for Nolan - 2 year ban minimum - that what Fouche got - thats what Nolan got. No easy deal because he's a nice guy (and he is eally a cool dude).

He (like everyone else who breaks the law/rules) should feel the full extent of his mistake.

lefty - not sure where you've been' date=' but neotel have NOT left the cycling arena. They have merely killed off their pro-team. They still have a big commitment to cycling SA and are doing GREAT things for cycling

It looks like you're blaming everyone and everything except nolan?

He made a **** move and admitted in a written letter that he cheated.

He understands the consequences of his actions, and is waiting for CSA hearing.

The story is that his ban will be 6months - 1year, depending on whether or not he squeals on his suppliers.

Whether or not he will get another pro team ride is another story...[/quote']

No dude I;m not blaming everyone and everything.

I'm suggesting that everyone shoudl stop blaming Nolan for everything thats transpired.

the Pro team did not fold because he doped. IS cycling such a shaky marketing platform that one transgression leads to the culling of around 10 Jobs?

Theres more to this than just doping.

Yes he made a mistake (**** move as you call it) and he will pay for it.

And that where it should end.

Why the continued vitriole? Let it rest

I am sure we can all learn a thing or 2 about forgiveness, but what do you call it when we slam guys who we don't know and have absolutely no bloody connection 2 or no idea what the heck is going on behind the scenes. I agree, we should drop all this skinner and have all these forums shut down.

Unfortunately, after the fouchebag incident, ALL neotel riders knew exactly what would happen if any of them were caught doping.

I'm not saying nolan is a horrible person. i'm saying his thoughtless selfishness cost lots of people their job.

Neotel had explained to them in no uncertain terms what would happen.

I fully support neotel's move to pull the plug. Which brand wants to be associated with an entity that has been caught doping.

Its happening all over the show in the pro peloton as well. Why do you think sponsors are pulling out everytime someone gets bust?

Ok I live in a bubble' date=' who is this Fouche bloke....?[/quote']

Herman Fouche.

he tested positive for 94.7. The results came out when he was @ neotel, but the +ive test was when he was with konica.

Neotel were mightily unimpressed, as when a pro signs his contract there is a "i have never doped" clause.

They took a firm stance and explained to all the riders what the situation would be if it happened again.

I disagree - the buck stopped with Nolan - he had the final say on whether the injection/pill went into his body.

At work we all get tempted and pressured by bribes/finders fees/dodgy dealings but most of us refuse. Why? Because it's the right thing to do.

Nolan knew there would be repurcussions well beyond his own skin and should have just said NO.

To start blatting on about pressure/team ethics/reduced pay is all poppy cock.

Nolan made the decision and has opted to take it on the chin.

He'll serve his time as he rightfully should and either ride or not ride again - time will tell.

I do agree that getting all personal and insulting the man isn't helping anybody. He did the crime so let him do the time everyone. Pressure or no pressure.

" I fully support Neotels move to pull the plug."

Can you honestly tell me that Neotel believed that their tenure in sponsoring a pro cycling team would be drug free!!

They knew the sport has a poor track record of drugs and the bad press that would follow when one of their riders was caught.

thats an interesting point you make...

Do they hope for a lucky season where no-one gets caught?

Or maybe sponsors are handled like mushrooms? kept in the dark and fed sh*t? I would imagine that neotel didnt have much direct input into how the team was run?

indeed an interesting point and sort of what I was thinking but did not articulate very well.

When they entered into the venture they must have had doping on the risk matrix and the value of fallout if a rider got caught. They should have had PR strategies in place to deal with this.

However two cases in 1 yr, well actually 1 because the other was inherited is hardly an epidemic and Nolan just seems to have exercised poor judgement. With Nolan being a product of the Neotel academy wa there not a bigger opportunity to turn a Positive test into positive publicity by exercising a more coaching attitude while he serves his ban.

Why hurt the greater community of cycling by withdrawing when then is more to gain from their staying put, weathering the storm (in a tea cup)

Neotel is behaving like a parent who throws their children out of the house when they discover one daughter is pregnant. Still a short sighted, narrowed minded approach to dealing with a problem IMO.

Indeed, but that is too boring for the conspiracy theorists!

Plus the drug testers also hang out in Cape Town these days.  i'm sure they know the Peninsula better than the riders!

...and again, if you buggers knew what cold really was you would understand what they are doing in sunny SA.
