So another year gone.  Welcome to 2018.

Just adding to the "new" thread about printing numbers......

So we can catch cheats taking short cut in a race or doing an event double but we can't "catch" someone doing a race illegal.

Patch mentioned printing at home will increase the cheats.

If a person wants to cheat he'll cheat.  With or without a number.

People enter or ride races for ONE reason.  Seeding.

So if you did not pay, you won't get a seeding.  And you get a DQ for the year.

Easy.

Give me a number for the year and off we go.

Agreed cheats will cheat. What I said was that it could increase cheats, well at least the organisers could think that and therefore want to put a few extra scanners or people checking numbers at shoots in place, barcoded entries like at concerts etc.

Point is the perception of losing control of race numbers might make the organisers nervous and therefore might entice them to implement some extra checks. Thats all.

The idea of annual numbers is however the correct longterm solution, but hell that is not going to get implemented anytime soon.

Sad thing is.....we had permanent numbers in place.

It was a working system

Understood.

But speaking to ANY organiser it is a bit of "head in the sand" thing.

I have had answers as

"We pay events company and they do it"

"CSA requires it to check if you have a license.

  1. Do it yourselves.  Save money
  2. Kick CSA out.
  3. How the hell do you allow someone to enter an event if he does not have a license?  It is a simple database check.

All just excuses to sheeple ahead and don't give a damn about the cyclist because they are still just making money......

The big CSA/Argus/CTCT seeding / Racetec "conglomerate" is still paying off.

Gupta has nothing on them!

Runners stil do.

When did you guys have this? Who ran it?

The province ran it.  In my case, Gauteng North Cycling gave you a plastic number when you joined the province and you got your number for life.

Every year you could collect you seeding sticker for the "local" Gauteng North races from GNC at the first race you did that year.

If you improved, you could apply for a better seeding during the year.  They'd review and bump you up.

I have a truck load of dysfunctional and functional race tagging technologies:

My first is my ASA cloth number issued by Athletics South Africa.

My second is my Mtn SAS electronic chipped Mtb board (used once)

My third is a handfull of racetech/champion chip/MRPrice electronic timing chips (some working some not)

My fourth is an old CGN plastic/cloth number with a Carsten Cycles sponsorship advert on it.

My fifth is my park run bar coded card (which I printed and laminated at own expense.

The ones that I still use are my ASA cloth number and my Parkrun bar code.  The rest are dysfunctional, either because they are no longer supported or they are used for such a limited number of events annually, it is more effort to find them, than just to rent the required transponder.  (racetec is Western Cape, Championchip is Comrades/OMTOM, SAS board is some MTB events ext)

Every year a new player arrives with a new standard, which promises to be the ultimate, and each year I put another board/transponder into the sock draw.

The best option is probably either to allow each rider to print and laminate a number, which is scanned at the start cutes or to use smart phone technology to allow a snap scan at the start cutes.

The challenge with timed events is to establish an open source code for the transponders to allow a universal scanner to pick up the cyclist preferred transponder, so as a cyclist/athlete you can buy ONE chip/board for all events.

This is exactly how I remember it. In fact I still have that plastic number

Its such a simple system

IIRC there are 2 frequencies used in SA for the RFiD tags. Most run on the same frequency, but "ignore" the competition's chips/tags.

So it is possible.  Bring your chip(any chip) and your smartphone/printed bar code, scan as you enter the cute, chip on system against the member's registration barcode.  Entry confirmed.

Riders to report at cute 1 hr prior to batch start and all is good?

Soon with start phones with RFiD enabled, there will be no need for the chip?

You could probably get away with a phone with NFC/RFiD.

There are loads of easy solutions to the actual number/chip thing... One would need to think out the box a bit to incorporate the sponsor(s) into it, as they are loosing prime advertising space on those numbers.

That’s probably the same gif that Edison’s neighbors sent him when his 2000th light bulb failed.

Probably, but it seems like trying to get race organizers to see the light is probably going to take much longer than it took Edison to see it...hence that very pissed bear moering that corpse.

This topic pops up every year around the time CTCT rolls into town. I would also happily forsake a not-so-goodie bag in exchange for not having to travel to stupid inconvenient venues at some inconvenient time simply to get a number.

Maybe we should go H&M a few CycleLabs and ASG stores, seems to get the attention we need.

Edit: Or we can ask Magda? She could get it done once she has fed all of Cape Town with 5 loaves and 2 fish, and turned their wine into water.

Cycling in SA is run like corrupt country. A few people at the top benefit and will continue to look after each others personal interests. Until the voters (members) demand change, nothing will change.

In 8 years time, we again be making reference to Phil's orginal post dating back to 2010.

How big is the pool of regular race riders in South Africa? 50K?.Surely we can organise via a focused campaign targeted via ad type peeps a stay away for races not being cyclist friendly. I only do races where I don't have to loose working time. They don't miss me but they may miss us.
