So i just got myself a brand new Mountain bike (Merida TFS 400d) and now i am not 100% sure where to go from here. Any suggestions on what i should do. i am thinking about taking a nice beginners lesson to mountain biking but other than that i am stumped. Any good races you could suggest to start off with?

Oh i am based in JHB by the way.

good stuff!

ride as hard as you can - you only fall a couple of times before you learn...  then if you lucky you'll fall again, infront of all your mates!

just hit the trails...

Join a MTB Club, safest option (safety in numbers), and there will always be someone to show you around.  Most clubs offer club rides on Saturday mornings at different rider levels (beginner, intermediate, elite)

Ya, dont worry about courses... they seem like a bit of a rip to me. Find some friends and go and ride. sure u might fall once or twice, but thats part of it.

northers quickie is def a good race to start with!

If you dont have any riding friends yet, go to a club as a guest once or twice. You will make friends pretty quickly, mtbers are pretty easy going.

You put your right leg over (the bike you chop!) and then push off slowly with your left leg and.......... your moving! Now just carry on and dont stop!Tongue

Congrats on getting a bike! You'll be spending your entire paycheck on bike goodies in no time! smiley36.gif

My advice:

1. Get reasonably fit. This will mean lots of riding, so maybe join a group (trailriding.co.za is good) and ride. The fitter you are, the more fun riding will be.

2. Do some skills clinics. You'll be able to ride safer and fall less, which will make it more fun. Trust me on this - I've not only attended a bunch of these, but also hosted a couple. It really helps your riding.

3. Have fun.

Oh, and if you haven't done so already, get a pair of padded shorts (please no lycra).

I bought my mtb and for about 6 months it was just standing there ...

And then one day I decided to go to Groenkloof and it was fun. I did not fall that day.

Since then I have fallen off a number of times and they tell me I can expect to fall off some more...

Gumpie, I hope you discover the beauty and feeling of feedom that comes with mtbking. It is just so much fun!

Hi Gumpie,

unless something changes we'll be at groenkloof this saturday with cyclelab centurion. If you PM me your number I'll confirm with the club and let you know. There is normally a beginner, intermediate and advanced group riding there. ;) Look forward to seeing you.

Welcome to the hub and to MTBing!

If you looking to join a club, I would suggest having a look at the guys from Fritz Pienar in Witkoppen Road.  I checked out a few shops and was going to join a club of a certain shop in fourways after buying my bike from them, they promised the world and delivered nothing, staff find it an effort to greet on the best of days.

The guys at Fritz are really friendly and helpfull, by far the most pleasant bunch in the area.

There are plenty of places to ride, just get friendly with a few guys in here and you will find rides.

I am going out to Teak sports on Sunday you more that welcome to join us, will show you around the green route, 10km of very easy stuff.

pm if you keen and we can make arrangements
