Im in. This sort of thing is a disgace. Lobby the politicians as well. They make the right noises everytime this happens but does absolutely NOTHING.

At least most of us are in agreement about why we will be wearing the black armband.

Added to that, it will ALSO create awareness.  Some people may not know why it is being done and will question it. When people talk about such issues, it will certainly make them be aware and on the lookout more than they might have been before.

Thousand of people watching the event on tv will also get the message as it will definitely be mentioned.  Therefore, even if looking at it clinically ( and I'm by no means doing that) it is a great way of creating awareness without having to pay advertising and marketing fees.  CSA, etc, can all just work from there and keep the momentum going.

I will wear my black armband with pride. I was brought up with that tradition - to honour and remember those who passed away.

Ian Dude...while I resapect your free speech....do me ONE BIG FAVOUR....?

Please do not wear a black armband!!!

We'll manage quite alright without your support!! GOOD luck with the EPO bud...I see it has already shrinked your gonads!!

It takes balls to make a statement - you don't have 'em....

Thank you for your inane contribution. Seeing as you don't understand my signature or it's allusions, i can't be bothered to explain it, but look up h-u-m-o-u-r and i-r-o-n-y in your spare time. If you read my post you'll see i indeed made a statement. For the benefit of you and others missing the point i made, let me clarify it.

Wearing armbands is a nice sentiment, but aside from creating some brief awareness, its hardly going to make a fundamental change to our driving culture - not to mention or our cycling culture, where fingers can also be justly pointed.

For sure, if the publicity around wearing armbands is milked relentlessly, and converted into action, then we're getting somewhere, and ideas for action are where the posts are now thankfully headed. But wearing an armband is not going to change motorists' mindset, so we shouldn't imagine that the changes we need will come simply from doing that.

would be good if we could get The Cycle Tour to help give out Armbands at the registration .

I organised Armbands at the Burger in 2008 for Brain Crabb who was killed in Kommetjie and his friend Glen Bee was in hospital .

This is a great idea and I fully support the initiative.

It would have been really cool to organize some of these though, instead of black armbands:

It would serve a double purpose - awareness for the cause and awareness of the need for us to make ourselves more visible on the roads.

Its a pity its such short notice. I would have been willing to supply these to Hubbers at cost, if there were enough time to source them before the Argus.

It is at least a start. Even if one motorist stops to think about it and tries to make an effort to change his driving then it will be a success. Nothing will change overnight. But this is a start. You can't get from JHB to CPT in one step. This is the first step. As my teaches told me years ago at school - Big elephant, small pieces! The impression I get is that you are only prepared to do something that will magically change the position and solve the issues overnight in one go. That won't happen! This noble effort is a start! And it is great that Hubbers are prepared to be part of it!

email your clubs and ask them to send out an email!

Incidentally, did any of you find a sticker in your goodiebags at Argus last year, referring to yellow lane driving? Pickfords, PPA and CSA had put money into that effort, but I never saw the result.
