Hey all....I am looking at buying my first MTB and have found a 2nd hand Scott S30 at a really good price. The only thing I am not sure of is that it has a Carbon frame...any comments?

Thanks Legend..Why? Do they crack? What's the negative?

just because of scratches and dings.

carbon on a mtb....I hope you never crash...I am sure it will survive it...but I just personally will never trust the frame again.

generally i don't trust the material!

then, i've been at two world cups the past months and you could see how bad the frames look. stuff splitters of everywhere and theses frames are usually pretty new.

you crash once with your bike, nothing spectacular, or only your bike falls over, frame part bounces on rock - byebye, would never trust in the bike again. carbonfibre has high potential but so far i can't see it being used for mtb's. stones, crashes, .. too much stress on the fibres from the wrong direction.

aluminuim can take some beatin, you might have a dent in your frame but that doesn't reduce the frame's strength.

carbonfibre only if sponsored!

of coruse carbonfibre frames can also last but i jsut don't trust it. go aluminium or titanium, ti is awesome.

If Daemon had a Carbon frame at the Induna race it would be a write-off now . I feel much saver with something I know is able to take a knock , get dinged , scrathed and thrown around .

Yup, but then in all fairness I won't enter a Downhill race on a carbon frame ;) Alu and Ti is the best!

Hey holy roller.......the bike has done about 1000km...and the owner is in the business, I don't know him well but I suppose he has a reputation to keep. I saw the bike before I left and it was in perfect condition....

I won't be doing very technical rides as I am a social rider..

It's not all doom and gloom, they can take pretty decent knocks without breaking. I have two mates who ride carbon Scotts and they've had no hassles besides the rear shock issue, which seems to be sorted now. Both bikes have been through 2 Cape Epics, 2 Karoo to Coasts and numerous other one day races around the country without any problems.

btw... both of them fall often as well.

If they were as crap as some of you make out, knowone would be riding carbon.
