Pardon my ignorance but I dont get the singlespeed thing.

Building the bike I can understand. Technical process of creating a beautiful new machine.

Riding the machine is the challenge for me. As it is I need all the gears I have and sometimes wish for even more.

It seems to me that the retro process might eventually mean ending up on a bike without a drivetrain. I think these were the also set up with non pneumatic tyres and called boneshakers. Fancy riding that for fun.

Now I fully expect to be flamed for my ignorance but hopethat some clarification might occur as well.

:) :) :)

There's nothing to get. You either love riding a single speed bike or you don't. That's it, all there is to it. Add a rigid fork and you have less servicing costs = bonus (more money to spend on beer and pizza). When you get to a event that is wet and muddy on the day, it puts a bigger smile on your face because.......you know there will be many riders having e.g. chain suck problems, replacing drive trains, servicing shocks, etc, etc, etc.

thats why i"m laughing my ass off at the guys on the sabie experience thread bitching about the rain and mud. I'm riding it on my Rigid SS and know i'm gonna be passing lots of walkers. haha. also at the end of the day all i gotta do is hose of the mud, add a couple of drops of lube to chain and put my feet up, while the geareys are gonna be fiddling with derailers, cables and cassettes. MMMMMMWWWWAHAHAHAH (evil laugh)

Freehub singlespeeds are only for sissies...... fixies are for the purists..... choose your own weapon!!!!!!!

Here we go again, another super tough hero.

I see a whole lotta big talking about SS bikes and fixed gear, now even the free hub SS riders are sissies, but take y'all a bet that the fixed gear purists can't get further than 50 k's on their bikes (and thats on the black stuff)

Yes but a problem arises.

The comment above and the rest of the bloody posers out there aren't really adding any benefit.

I hear a lot of grootbekke talk about their single speeds and how hardcore they are , but they can't even finish a bloomin half marathon properly.

Posers, then they start their tril slinging on how small a sprocket and big blade they ride, but they neglect to fill in as to how quick they can get up the hill.

I reckon the bottom will fall out of it in time to come and all the bloody posers will dissapear.

Good grief, even in the SS community people now have to cause a divide

The problem is, the guys and gals on the geared bikes laugh and shake their heads at you when they pass you on the flat sections :(

We are all wannabe-hero-hardcore-attention-seeking-numb-nuts. Any peeps completing the Attakwas Ultra on a Steel SSR are the REAL hero's in my eyes  One day when I'm big

If you want to make it a fixie, you'll need a track frame (geometry). Any old road frame can be turned into a SS using a chain tensioner, but ideal is a track frame. Best place to wise up is sheldonbrown.com

Fixie > old roadbike frame = dental work and other surgery.

Old frames? Gumtree, pawnshops, junk shops, you just need eyes like a shithouse rat.
