C'mon guys its going to be great' date=' the biggest sporting event in the world in our country it can only be awesome. South African's need to stop being so pessimistic every time something good is on the horizon, stop being so selfish and worrying because a race is canceled.  [/quote']

Nothing to do with that... We have people burning down municipal buildings in desperation and frustration because we do not have the money to delivery municipal services to them... But fear not... We are going to host the Soccer world Cup!

Really, how will this World Cup be of benefit to the people waiting for the above?

Oh...so If we didnt host the world cup these people would have been sorted? Me thinks not.

Maybe not a direct cause and effect, but at least then the political focus and the fiscal ability would have been there to service the needs of the people

I was happy when I heard we were awarded the world cup to host.  Did not realise then that there would be positive and negative impacts.  Many of the negatives are enforced by FIFA it seems..

I look at our team of hopefulls..at last they beat a team of Jamaicans and slip from 88 to 90 place for their efforts.  They have been touring overseas and I heard of mega millions of the Lotto money being used to pay for this..wtf..mega millions of lotto money spent on a few, who are unable to score even if the goal mouth was left wide open ..could debate this all day.

The roads between JHB and Pretoria that I travel on are looking promising in my opinion (thanks to WC I like to think so..yeah they want to toll it later..so whats new  they toll every other road?  The Gautrain was not planned for the world cup they say but I guess it could be a huge positive going forward..and I can bet they wish it was finished on time. The stadiums are looking great and I really hope and trust that the local administrators will keeep them maintained after the world cup as I do not think that the revenue income will pay for a stadium like the one in Polokwane if I look at the number of games being played there during the WC.

Then the perceived negative effects,

Pilditch is closed for two months plus... so no track cycling..Home base for the Americans, so I would not go near there even if it was open :-)

Flu vaccinations not provided by the employer so no free Vitality points..will do one more gym session to make up the points

A special policy on absence etc during the WC gets draughted..does no one know how to be a good employee anymore..ok do not answer that, it is a retorical question?

There is such bollox going on around this whole thing, like the billions that was spent on some IT system (that isnt working) via a dodgy tender that is supposed to keep track of fans arriving to ensure they have left (yesterday's Business Day) - I mean that is such a joke really considering our porous borders and the number of 'aliens' that walk across the borders here. And many more stories like this.

Like I said, its just a smoke screen for graft and plunder.

And if I wasnt an optimist, I wouldn't be here.

have to agree with you..with millions being spent on a project like the WC/arms deal etc..there will be funny dealings and alas we will probably never ever hear the truth but rather that which everyone would like us to believe is the truth.

You talk about our borders as though such a thing really existsWink.  I was amused to hear an article a couple of weeks ago about a contingent of soldiers that would patrol our borders during the WC..I wonder if they actually know where and what to patrol..every illegal immigrant worth his salt should be here already..its just the LSD (lame, sick and dead..could not resist this reference sorry) that still have to get here
