uh oh.

when is helping a fellow rider, helping a fellow rider ? Signalling to others to go help because the ride (race) is more important, (going to find help), or actually stopping and attempting to do first aid and you have no idea what first aid is ?

and before you ask. At my first mtb ride, the karoo to coast, I cam round a corner and a bloke had fallen badly (KO on the floor with plenty of damage). Someone had already stopped, I asked if they needed help, and they said to go and find a support team to help, so off I went. About 2 min later I found a guy sitting under a tree on one of those motorbikes and he went to help.

How about telling the whole group to stop?

If there were people already attending to wannabe, Bos would have just been an onlooker. I don't think he is the type of guy to not care...

And me thinks the tjop who caused the fall should have stopped, but he was probably too busy sh!$ing himself, or couldn't care...

Just my 2c

Glad you are okay Wannabe... hope to see you on our rides again soon...

No worries, Bos, I'm happy to be alive and very glad to know what really happened! Thanks for making contact. I thought I had blacked out before the fall and that my short "cycling career" was over. So happy I can get back on my bike asap.

Got 3 broken ribes, a few stiches on my face and my left hand, a few hectic tar burns and 1 hour's memory loss - not too bad after hearing what happened! O, and I need new clothing from my socks to my helmet - nothing came out unscathed... donations welcome :)

And thanks to God for a doctor in the race, Dirk von Delft, who stopped and helped when he got to me.

It looked like we were on schedule for a sub 3... what was your time in the end, Bos? And the rest?

and do what? hold hands and sing a song?

From the injuries wanne-b mentioned, having the bunch there would not have made the situation better. He received the help he needed and is alive.....with someone at least telling him, what happened.

As someone who has done a First Aid course, I have heard about the damage people can do if they are not qualified! It is always best to call someone who knows what to do! Apparently there were alot of falls during the race! Just standing at the finish we saw loads of grazes, broken noses, blood and swearing! I hope you are ok! Must have been bloody scary!

There's nothing like a song in a time of need. Who knows maybe someone even had a guitar.

I hope that you told the oke in the bunch who caused the crash to stop?

Why are you all suddenly behaving like such vlipping assholls??

Dont be so vlipping self riteous there in front of your PC now ok.. **** stakes Coenie, How is it now the rider ahead of hom's fault that he overlapped wheels with the guy behind him?

Heres the picture. And then Im unsubscribing from this thread, because this is really upsetting for me being accused like this as I said, I couldnt sleep that night.. this is sensitive for me as Im typing my hands are shaking....

I had ridden 60km( the 85km the day before) I had just been part of a bit of a break when the bunch reeled us in when going into the wind..so

1-Im vlipping tired (some of you can hardly ride in a straight line when tired dont blame me for a mistake in judgement)

2- the guy pretty much took me out, for what I could say was his fault and not paying attension to the wheel in front of him ( this wasnt my intent to have to say this but as I would like to have a "name" left after this Im mentionning this and you damn okes always have to make someone the guilty party, the thread said "what happened" not who didnt stop.) I got the fright of my life and would have been in the same boat as him If I hadnt reacted so quickly and somehow missed him.

3- I was so bewildered I seriously had no Idea what to do, I was dumbstruck.. I saw the oke lying there and to this moment I have not even thought of being such an Idiot as you all now making me out to be...

Next time I will stop OK But FFsakes you were not there in that moment..

Dirt girl, dankie dat jy vir my opkom, the rest of you get off my effing back. Im helova upset tright now

Wanna B Im sorry for not stopping, Really really. Im not trying to say I was right, just these other peeps that is so keen to throw the first stone.

Had It been a case where there were not 10 cars going about 20km/hour next to you or It came to thought..

Like I said, Glad youre allive

Glad it's not too long that you are off the bike! Speedy recovery...and maybe you should think about doing MTB rather...no crashes like these! ;)

Hey Bos, we all know you are a good guy! Don't worry about this, he is fine, you are fine - and that really is the only issue here. :)

as mtbBarbie says, a lot of damage can be done by giving the wrong help... eg moving a rider.

for those who do believe in stopping and assisting a fallen rider:

- if there is a 1st aider follow their instructions

- if rider is down/out do not move them - direct the traffic around them

- if rider is up-and-about get them and their bike out the way

- if rider has taken a knock to the head but wants to ride on, don't let them (even if they are "up and about" but especially if they keep passing out each time they try to get up)

- if rider is badly injured check for their emergency info (911 band or whatever) so that it's handy when the medics get there

- check that rider's cell phone is working and if battery is low copy off the ICE number or if they are able to tell you who to call that person's number

- if there is any chance that the rider has serious injuries, broken anything badly or might need an op do not in any circumstances allow food/drink

- if rider has fallen due to dehydration get them to lie down (in shade) with feet up and give them rehydrat, water or energy drink (in that order of preference)

that's just a starter list

i've done first aid level 1 and 2 courses, customised for extreme sport and for motorbiking so i always stop. cycling, mountainbiking, motorbiking or simply a stock standard mva (motor vehicle accident). my bestest "feel good" moments in life are when badly injured people let me know they are fine a while later (eg a girl whose hand got almost-ripped-off in a truck accident, bones snapped and hanging by about 3cm of skin) called me about 3 months later and let me know that her hand was saved, and the docs said it was due to the correct 1st aid at the scene. So if you don't know what to do and other people have stopped to assist, unless they call out for help (eg traffic control) you should rather stay out the way.

but yes, a witness to the actual event is always helpful

I was doing a race....and 4 of came around the corner (MTB race by the way) and there was a guy in the road KO'ed, blood steaming from his face, we ALL stopped and asked we could help...in a few sec there were 12 people there and in the moment most of us had forgotten the tel number to call so it DID help...one oke had the number but no phone, the others phone battery was flat so in the end all the info together assisted in getting the person some help....

I always stop, even if the guy behind me touches my wheel and goes down....I stop and ask if I can help....maybe if I can only look after his bike while the ambulance takes him away...It is called "caring" for your fellow cyclist....

G-E-N-T-L-E group hug... ribs still touchy!

Bos had to make a very quick decision under sever stress, and he made the right one. There was enough help around. If he had anything to hide he would not have been part of this discussion.

And God willing I'll be in Knysna in 2011 to try again!

Wanna-B - Glad ur OK and gonna ride another day!

There's 2 types of cyclists, those that have fallen and those that are gonna fall!

Bos - i know how u feel, making a decision in an instant isn't easy, esp when racing. Carnival City 2010 - I've been there where 3 club mates went down in a bunch when our group passed theirs. I never stopped yet i knew those people, was i wrong? I was riding in the top 4-5 in our group when it happened. Yes i was concerned til i got to the end and found out 2 came out with minor bumbs, scratches and bruises, 3rd had a broken collar bone (bye bye Argus).

I just hope that those that k@k you out, have the balls to admit something when it happens, as you have and take the heat equally!
