I know a lot of Hubbers will come up with a lot of arguments, but I would like to know which Shimano groupsets are supposed to be in line with which Campagnolo groupsets? I must confess that I am not verry knowledgeable about the Campy range. For example, with which groupset is the Veloce supposed to compete with? Is it with Tiagra or 105? steynja2007-09-06 08:10:43

Xenon   =   Sora

Mirage   =   Tiagra

Velocce  =   105

Centaur =   Ultegra

Chorus   =   Dura Ace

Record   =    ?????????????

What is also great is that all Campy groupsets are 10 Speed, Shimano still stuff around with 8 , 9 & 10 Speed.   And then of course the exclusivity off campyClapClapClapClap

Steynja.

I have ridden with Shimano Ultegra for 8 years and the past 6 years with Campagnolo. (Chorus for a year and Record for 5

Shimano is a smooth groupset.  Shifting is smooth and sometimes you don't even know you went from one gear to the other.

BUT.  If a Shimano STI goes or wears out....YOU BUY A NEW SET.  That's the hard fact.  And I had to replace 3 sets in that 8 years.  (One set was 13 months old)  Each time there is a R2500 dent in your pocket.

Campy is less smooth.  A clear "cluck" every time you switch gears.  The levers are smaller and I LOVE the feel to it compared to the bulky Shimano shifters.

Other than that not much of a difference.

BUT.....Campy you can open up and service.  In the past  5 years I have serviced my levers ONCE and the total cost was R250 including new springs.  Good as new!!

Love the carbon look on the Campy which now comes in Record, Chorus and Veloce.  NICE!

Unfortunately I have no experience in SRAM.  Can only tell you what I have seen.....and what I have seen is not all good.

But they are "new" to the road scene and their products are already state of the art!

Hope that helps.

PS:  Expect a war on this one.....

I'll go cog the gun quickly.

I would rather say some have carbon cranks and derailleurs but the 3 mentioned hav got carbon levers. Not that it will convince a non carbon fan.

Another thing, Shimano looks good on any bike, Campag looks good only on Italian bikes and Cannondales. That time Raleigh had a Campag version it just looked stooopit.

That's because Raleighs look stooopit, PERIOD!

The Campy had nothing to do with it!

Kona, their is a big difference in "What I want to ride: vs "What I can afford to ride".

does it make sense?

Make Campy parts me riding faster = NO

Does it look better than shimano - Yes,.... because its carbon?

Does it work/shift better - I dunno, never had campy.

(but not for long anymore, shimano is bringing out carbon stuff.)
