Is it wise to train while on antibiotics?

After my incident with the dog, I'm on a course of Augmentin SR (Amoxicilline / Clavulanic acid, 1062,5mg) Two tablets, twice a day.

I've been off the bike since Monday, but must get training again this weekend. Is it advised or not?

Defintely not. Best to stay off the bike till the course is finished. Had to go onto a course before Ironman this year and the doc made it quite clear to wait till course was finished.

Hope that helps

Absolutely no reason you can't train while taking antibiotics, especially what seem to be prophyllactic ab's for a dogbite.

If you are on antibiotics for an underlying systemic infection then the reason you might be advised not to train would be the underlying infection, not the ab usage

Is it for a skin infection or what? The antibiotics is not the worry, it is the virus it is used to fight. So in most cases it is best not to train while on antibiotics because of the effect the virus will have on the body when training and not the antibiotics. Although some side effects of the antibiotics may have an effect on your body (stomach problems most common) which will mean that training will not be the best idea. But rather wait for the 5-7 days to pass and give the body a rest.

Rest dude and stay away from the BOOZE! Consult your GP rather and let the hubbers kill themselves with their high level of medical knowledge. It is not about what you take the AB's for, it is what you are taking....

If you have a cold and your on antibiotics ill say no, but for the dog bite i cant see y you cant train.

If you have a cold and you're on antibiotics you should prolly change your doctor.

Wannabe, as others have said: call your doctor and get a real answer.

Don't assume that all posters on the Hub are clueless. However, the difficult part is telling the clueless from the clued-up.

I can certainly tell you that ab's are not used to treat viruses (although everyone still wants them when they have flu - waste of time & money), and it is very much about what you take the AB's for, not what you are taking!

I reiterate: there is no reason you cannot train while taking antibiotics, especially prophyllactic antibiotics, especially penicillin derivatives (which are particularly benign).

There is a theoretical risk to joints & tendons if one was taking a quinolone-class ab (eg Ciprobay) but it would apply more to impact sports such as running.

Here is a real scientific article to peruse - sorry, it does contain some long words:

Take it light and easy spinning for the 1st week, Wannabe. Let you body restore itself and fight off whatever may be there

Then get back to higher intensity.

All in all, get betta soon! B)

I Rode the Baviaans whilst High as a Kite!

I woke up with MAJOR TOOTH ACHE the day before and the Dentist couldnt risk a root canal whilst there was swelling etc, so she gave me these big bombs they were the size of a sippository but I took them Orally 3 times a day.. 3 TIMES!! haha and topped it off with 2x myprodols and swallowed it down with a beer.also 3 times a day..

so the day of the race I only took one bomb in the morning and eased off on the Myprods, my doc also rode the Myprods and skeemed it was cool as long as im not 'wobbly" and land on my sore mouth.. hehe

Thanks guys. Dr said I must stay off bike as long as wound is seeping. When dressing it this morn I noticed it does not seep anymore. No swelling or signs of redness. Slightly bruised, but that is to be expected.

Course is finished on Saturday, no riding planned due to previous commitments. Sunday a longish ride planned. Hopefully not too high intensity.

So its back on the bike on Sunday then. (maybe a short stint on the Mtb this arfie to go look for those dogs, got a score to settle :D )

And with the extra fa... er... musc... er, body weight it's gonna take a whole lot more to get me in that condition. And to keep me there... I just normally have a GU or two, and pray! Now I've not only got supplements, but "medication" to worry about! F*** me! :D
