PPA has me frustrated.... help please!

I'm from KZN, moved to the Cape a few months ago and getting really frustrated with this whole PPA business!

I Did the EDCC 99km in Wellington on Sunday just to find "no results" on the Racetec website, mailed them just to find out that only PPA members can have their time displayed! As a benefit of being a PPA member

Why did I then join a club, and bought a CSA license, and a Racetec chip? If it comes in as totally useless when PPA decides to throw their name over an event, as I understand it Cycling South-Africa is the governing body over cycling, so where does PPA fit in???

I bought a chip so that I can get timed and build on my seeding, but it's real frustrating when you finish a 99km race in 2h48 (according to my trip computer) and can't get your results confirmed! My actual time might even be better by a few minutes as I started the trip meter while waiting at the start and ended it a bit later after the finish

Can someone please explain the role of PPA    (deep sigh).........

Simple, If you not a member of PPA you will not get a seeding. To be seeded in PPA events you need to be a member.

If you are a fun rider you will most probably be doing PPA events, so sign up with them. They are also effectively a club so effectively you need to be a member of their club to enjoy the benefits of their organized events. you can join PPA as a club as well and affiliate to CSA through them. But then if you are into MTB and want to enjoy the befits of what some of these clubs offer you need to be a member of them as well.

Just the way it is. Remember you need to join a club to join CSA, for how long still I am not sure, but you can belong to many clubs (you can only affiliate to CSA through one tho)

Oh yes and if you are a member of PPA you also automatically get a better seeding in the PnP Cape Argus compared to non PPA and non seeded members.

Elvin you are not the only one frustrated with PPA. I have been a long time member but have not renewed this year due to the kind of cr@p you described above..and thats not where it ends. Luckily for us there are so many races these days not organised by PPA, and you can start at the FRONT (if you are competitive) as a non-PPA/club member (unlike the PPA races) and EVERYONE gets a time. There is no reason why a non PPA member should not be allowed to start a race at the front (mtb races) if he/she is competitive and not get a time. I hope PPA will become more accomodating to all cyclists in the future.

Elvin well done on your time.

As to your issue.

My answer will be simple.

Either have membership to a Club, what benefit can they offer?

Or have membership to PPA, which is classified as a Club.

Gives you a CSA license.

Gives you a Seeding and progress as you improve.

Gives you discount at Bike shops and Cloth stores. Cape Storm

Where a Club can only offer me people to ride with.

Hi Elwin,

At least we get something from the PPA. A PPA Member starts races according to their seeding no, and the fun riders fast or not starts at the back.

The PPA keeps your race results etc etc. Included in your PPA membership is your affiliation to the CSA, and they do absolutely squat for any cyclist in South Africa except taking our money. Nil return. Read all other gripes regarding the CSA and then comment on the PPA.

BTW : I also had some run-ins with the PPA, jump on them when they step out of line, I do !!

The PPA organisation and system is cool.

And worthit, Elton.

Try it and then comment.

And like all things in life, PPA has it's flaws...

At the end of the day if you see anything with PPA in it just know it will be a stuff up.

They are the limp wristed mafia who have their foot nicely in the door and dont give a crap about the sport but rather the business side of things. They do some PR once in a while and dont really contribute to the everyday cyclists enjoyment of the sport. Not sure if you were here last year when a cyclist was killed the PPA used this as a great opportunity to make a noise and that's all they did. Nothing came of it.

Cycling safety has not improved, events have not improved, but business is good as cyclists have no choice but join the mafia I mean PPA.

In the same way PPA do nothing, let me rather not say anything, got me into a heated debate last time.

All I can say is if you are CSA license then you sould be part of the PPA. The 2 bodies are amalgamating or already have amalgamated. so either CSA owns PPA or PPA owns CSA. . . . . . my money is on the latter.

I wouldn't be suprised if PPA are just trying to squeeze more money out of you so you can get your results.

So if I'm in town for a week and decide to do a race I will not get results just because I am not a member? That is one way to give the out of towners a big "FU, you are not welcome in our races".

No, I'm pretty sure that as long as you have the right sort of chip you'll be included.

Come and ride the Burger in early Dec and try it out!

Elvin ones you pay your PPA membership then you will soon find out just how FCUKed up the seeding system is and then your frustration will turn into full blown anger. But unfortunatly you have no other choice but to join the mafia :( sad but true.
